So what's with Gridania?

Yeah I started in Gridania, stayed for 2 days.

Today I made the 20 minute trek to Ul'dah and I do not miss that place.

However I still have 3 or 4 sidequests left there and now I can't progress the story without going back, grrrr

Shoulda started in Ul'dah.

Dear GOD burn black shroud to the ground it wont be missed.

actually theirs quite a few people i talk to in game that love the shroud more than other city-states just the main concern i hear a lot is that its to enclosed

The whole area is enclosed and like a maze... I like the idea of the black shroud but I can't be bothered to have to run in a maze to get to where I need to go.

I'd rather some crazy forest maze dungeon, then make the actual outside starting area like a maze. Then again, the current zones (regions) are so big...you end up running into crazy high rank monsters right around the corner from things you or a party could take on (i'm talking a gap like rank 30 to rank 77).

As a BTN I like the Black Shroud. But that said I do agree that it's narrow maze like nature is annoying. I would like something more similar to Zi'tah from FFXI. Not 100% open but not a narrow maze either it was a good balance. But I do have to say that with the whole destruction thing being talked about everywhere that it's more likely the zone is going to be destroyed and it will be part of the story which I hope doesn't affect certain things like current side quests or harvesting areas. I guess time will tell.

The interesting part about if they redo the zone as part of the storyline it means they may be open to doing stuff like that in other zones in the future which could add a really cool dynamic to the story and world.

When i say burn it to the ground i mean scrap the map and make a real forest looking zone not a dam rocky maze with a green sky.

I hope they Completely re-create all of the black shroud. that place is just wrong

I like the forest as is, but if it changes to look a bit more like a buffed up Ronfaure/Zi'tah/Jugner Forest and to some degree Caedarva Mire, then I'd be fine with it. As long as I still have my green and somewhat rainy forest zone to hang out it then I'm happy.
