I would almost wager that if they tried to make crafters into a battle class, they would either devolve into "buff bots" or be numerically mediocre at a role at best.

Thats what DoL/DoH originally were supposed to be but they pulled all their skills at the last minute. That is why they are such a ridiculous grind as they were never meant to rank up solely on gathering and crafting.
