The whole purpose of crafting and gathering is the economy. If there is no economy for say blacksmithing and armorsmithing, there is something majorly wrong. That is what crafting is in a mmo, it is why most people do it.

If SE does not fix the economy they should save money and stop updating crafting and gathering. Put it towards battle content. I pray to god they do not do that, but atm there is almost 0 reason to level crafting or gathering in FFXIV:ARR unless you want the achievements.

You better get in that kitchen and start cooking then, because you're only really gonna turn a profit from food that way, as of right now, no you're not gonna make much off ARM or BSM because gear is very easy to get,of course you're not gonna make money that way, but everyone needs to eat lol. Another thing is as of right now, alot of people don't know how to make money in this game, or turn a profit on high demand items, or even know which items are in high demand at the moment, I really don't see the need for people to be so gil hungry right now anyway, all I see in this thread is: "I want my millions of Gil now, why is no one buying me precious HQ gear?". As it stands Darklight and AF+1 are the best bets for gear, but come a few patches down the road, we may see an influx in demand for HQ crafted gear and what these items will bring to the table, so for the time being, forget about selling gear in the market, and focus on what is in demand: materia for your relic weapons and materia for your level 40 gear, food, and mats, because lets face not everyone is gonna gather their own mats so you can still make money that way.

And sometimes it is a horrible thing. Remember 1.0 at launch (or how they butchered the game with this 2.0)? Yeeeah, that was one big change. See how that went? Yeah, change isn't always a good thing.

And what exactly would that be? A currency of sorts only to be used for teleports and repairs, kinda like an equivalent of anima? Ooh, ooh, maybe some sort of collector's item? Hmm, I wonder...

Personally, I empty the AH of anything I see being sold for less than it can be vendored for. Used to make a pretty penny doing that with spell scrolls in FFXI, and it's sort of funny to see it happen here too. Unfortunately it's nowhere near the windfall in this game.

Only thing worth a damn in my opinion now is food, jewelry(till you get enough tokens at 50), and materia. But mostly food.
