There's hardly any reason for people to spread out at the moment. Low overall player count is probably the biggest factor. All towns were crowded at launch.
Renta is right, at launch each place was equally crowded, I would venture to say that Limsa was by far the most populated due to the best low level grinding areas (particularly sheep).
As time passed you began to see Uldah taking over as the main storyline forces you to go there to complete missions, as well as the fact that most of the full time crafters resided there as well and that was really your only chance of getting gear.
Time continued on and when the SP was best for solo players it was coblyns that were the best sp/hr by far, so Uldah still remained the #1 place to be.
By this point a majority of the population just considered Uldah the place to meet people, shout for pick up groups, sell their items in the wards, and just basically always be. The way anima is set up you'd punish yourself for trying to root yourself in a different city.

These are deff the biggest and most major points. So unless people start getting out to those cities or the server a whole feel that another place is better it will change just as it did with Uldah.
With the release of Grand companies I believe there is going to be a spreading out of the server. whether by mandatory starter city allegiance or (hopefully) by natural spread. (it would be REALLLLLY lame if everyone on the server was part of the Immortal Flames...) I personally plan on returning to Gridania with the release of the Grand Companies. You guys better believe I plan on trying to get some of you to come with me back to Gridania hahahah
Agreed.
We can only hope that thousands of peeps jump online before too long. Then people will try and get away from each other as opposed to congregate to where everyone else is.
Personally I love LL. In fact, it makes me sad to see it so depleted of characters. The outlying areas are stunning and the lore is consistent throughout.

uldah ftw!!
it's nice to have a sort of central hub city, makes /shouting and shopping sooo much easier and reliable considering the fairly low server population atm.. (/shouting in uldah will almost always get u an answer, and shopping is op there lol.. i srsly don't remember the last time i visited the wards in grid or limsa cuz it's almost obvious/understood that whatever u're looking for'll be in uldah anyways. saves travel time too i guess)
I went back! I went back to join the Adders and then... first quest... they sent me back to Ul'Dah!!! I find it a bit sad too though, how dead Grid is especially. It's my favourite place actually (*legasp!* am I allowed to say that?) and it's where I started. I don't find it hard to get around - not any more so than anywhere else - but it is a looooooong run to Ul'Dah and I agree with a lot of ppl here that you'd be shooting yourself in the foot to base in Grid since anima is the only sane way to jump to other cities as needed.
Also, Market Central is Ul'Dah. If you're looking for items, it's the place to go.
I love deadlines. I love the whooshing sound they make as they fly by. (Douglas Adams)
