Duty Finder: Role Assignments

I am really not liking the assigned roles for the Duty Finder through my own gameplay but wanted to get some other opinions and see what everyone else was experiencing.

From my point of view you should have a choice of what role you are going in with. For example MRD/WAR should be able to choose tank or damage as their role, ACN should certainly be able to choose heals or damage, etc. If I have two WHM in a party with one healing and one doing damage then why can you queue up that way?

I do understand there are reasons for doing it the way they have and they don't want people who are not speced for healing to go into a duty as a "healer" role and screw the other people in the group, but there are definitely pros and cons either way.

Please let me know what some other opinions are and reasoning.

If you want to dps as a war or pld in your own premade groups, great!. I don't want to be bogged download with a slow run because LEETWAR69 from random-server wants to try to fill a dps slot because I'm unlucky enough to get them in my DF queue. I'm fine with the DF catering specifically to the primary class roles.

Arcanist can't reliably heal anything past level 25. White Mage can't DD nearly as effectively as a real DD job, even with Cleric Stance.

The fact that the game limits you to your "intended" role is probably better than the alternative, as you say. Who wants to wait an hour to get into an instance, only to find that their tank is an Arcanist with Topaz out, their healer is another Arcanist, and both of their DDs are conjurers?

As it is, you can get around the restriction by putting together your own party. I've run plenty of low-level groups without a real tank or a real healer. We one-heal/one-tank Praetorium every single time. As long as you put together your full party (and thus not subjecting any randomly-selected players to your weird group setup) then you can do whatever you want!

I do see this point of view and it would totally suck to get someone who doesn't know what they are doing with the class or the role, but it sucks to get someone who doesn't know what they are doing period. This seems like it is punishing players who are good enough at their role/class/job to DPS just fine as a WAR or WHM.

I'm starting to see that maybe doing roles that are not the main role for that class is for advanced players. I know we have done some whacked party configurations and won, but it was harder and an actual challenge as opposed to doing it with a traditional party set up.

This right here. While i'm all for people playing the way they want, DF really forces it so you have less trouble with random people. I will say i wish the group make up was 5, so there could be more flexibility, and possibly for a class like summoner or arcanist to be a "support" type. It's one thing i'm let down about the game, there only seems to be the trinity. :\

I personally want to see a class difference rather than just class category. Like when queing up for raids it would be nice to see what type of tank is joining i.e. are they a pld or war etc. That way I can adjust accordingly. Also I think you should be able to switch classes as long as its within the same category i.e. mnk > drg.

Honestly, I think it's fine the way it is. The problem is people who made a character w/o doing proper research into class roles don't want to live with the decision that they made.

As someone has mentioned already, I actually really like how DF is right now with the restrictions because of the random element of running into people. Premade, however, you can still arrange the party however you want, but putting up restricted roles when randomly putting people together I actually very much like. In my opinion, it seems like a decent way of reducing queue hoppers who queue for the wrong role solely so they can jump ahead in line. I can't say that it works as a fact, though... just theory.
