I kind of think I shouldn't be able to Sleep level 45 mobs as a level 17 THM

I'm all about making the game enjoyable for everyone, and having something that's way too difficult will deter the vast majority of non-hardcore players (see: ffxi). However, I kind of feel like there's no way I should be able to sleep high level mobs as a thm; especially mobs over twice my level.

Am I wrong here? Is there something I'm missing?

It's obvious we need a gearscore system to lock us out from fighting monsters above our level.

Hm. That's not at all where I was going with this, sorry. I mean, I don't want to be prevented from exploring, I just want there to be at least some danger aspect to it.

I had a different experience (not with sleep). Last night I hit 50 for the first time doing some fates in Northern Thanalan. After I hit 50, I switched to a lvl 17 CNJ just for fun. I was spamming aero just to try and stick a dot on some of the mobs and I literally missed EVERY time.

I think that the level discrepancy is being taken into consideration.

there is one for accuracy (but doesn't seem to be for DAMAGE I hit lvl 49 enemies the same as i do lvl 1 ones <.<; ) but SOME spells have some sort of hidden accuracy bonus. In OB i was running around on lvl 20 ACN and could CONSISTENTLY land Bio on even lvl 49 FATE enemies yet nothing ELSE lands, so maybe Sleep has near perfect accuracy too? idk

I don't think you're wrong. Most games do calculations that put your level against your target level and increase the fail chance accordingly, the same goes for hit chance; Mobs usually similar calculations for the reverse situation too.

From playing, it appears that XIV is missing these kind of interactions. Perhaps it's because they level lock so much content, they didn't feel the need to do things like this? I'm not sure.

Gear score will be good for DF groups, but i hope that it's only for groups that the Dungeon Finder has to build and not for groups that we build ourselves. I mean, it's my choice if me and three friends want to bring our undergeared friend to a dungeon with us after all.

Yeah - in most normal games (FF games included) you normally would get your face eaten off instantly if you so much as touched something you shouldn't, but YoshiP wanted this game to be "stress free" and removed stuff like resistances and affinities.
