    I'm an experienced and a very good tank in another mmo, but it was still a learning experience for FFXIV glad/pally tanking here. It was a bit of a shock to find no taunt or aggro leech skill here, but the extra work is making it fun and a new tanking experience.

    I wouldn't even say I was a great tank here, but am approaching good, I think, and still improving.

    But the point is, while I appreciate and largely agree with the OP, no amount of quest training really does the trick. In the end it just needs a lot of dungeon running and urge to constantly improve. But such is always the case when tanks and heals need to make the transition from solo to group play.

    If you can't take the time to read the tool tips that explain your move, which in turn, allow you to learn how to tank...well maybe you just shouldn't be putting other peoples HP in your hands. Maybe you should DPS.

    I am LOL so hard at this thread. Is it really that hard to find a good tank? I mean ive been tanking from Beta and the class quests made a point in teaching me how to use Flash. Whenever mobs would attack the NPC and they would spam Heartstopper for days. I would lose everytime until i realized what flash did. (along with not standing in the AOE)

    It has been pretty hard for me lately. Once I started doing Brayflox I've noticed an...unusual amount of tanks that don't know what they're doing. They will always focus on one mob only, everyone is getting hit...You can run it to them or say, "Please get this off me" but they will still stay on that one mob until its dead. You can try to be friendly and give them some advice without being a jerk, but they won't listen.

    You don't notice if you're playing a tank, just like I don't understand how you can have a bad healer...its pretty easy! But going through a few dungeons as a tank, I ran into a lot of healers who simply don't heal. You really should try doing a few dungeons as a dps or healer sometime so you can see just how many tanks right now just don't know what they're doing. I don't think people are complaining about decent tanks that lose aggro every now and then, its a bunch of tanks that have seemingly never been in a dungeon or any kind of group content before.

    Brayfox is also a Good training dungeon. There are mechanic's in that dungeon that I see people ignore. Such as the second boss fight.
    the last phase of that fight when the large Drake is after the gobbie, he keeps putting up Blaze Spikes. I have always get a chuckle watching some
    Pug or Lnc get pissed at me, thinking I lost hate because they are taking massive amounts of dmg. even if I tell them before the fight to not hit the dragon before the fight
    they still do it. There is a reason cancel auto attack is a General action. Sometimes not hit a mob is the right thing to do.

    Yeh, the level 30+ dungeons really define your party role. And one thing i like to do before beginning a dungeon is to always chat with my party members to see where their heads are at. If they've done it before, any tips/tricks, to see if they know anything.

    I support this, as a career tank myself. Its hard going as a smn or something in a 30 something dungeon and trying to 'teach' a tank while not coming off as naggy control freak.
    EDIT: Although... tanking, I've noticed many dps and healers like to cast something just as I go to pull. That is a no no if you don't want something gnawing your face off while I run around panicking spaming flash, provoke and overwhelm, trying to regroup the enemies around me. ^^;;

    If only the tanks came to the forum looking for advice... I think people usually create paladins just for the sake of being a paladin. They don't fully understand the job and I see people complaining about PLD not doing enough DPS compared to other classes. Seriously, wtf? This is not WoW, PLD is a tank, learn it or leave it. If you're going to pick a tank class, you should know what's the deal with it. On the other hand, I don't see this shortage of tanks, perhaps I don't notice it because I'm in a Legacy Server (I'm not Legacy), but I see a lot of both Paladins and Warriors...

    I see so many people using Provoke incorrectly, and I try to correct them (politely of course), and I always get bad attitude back.

    But running in and voking straight away is pointless, don't do it.

    Provoke does need a better tool tip. People don't seem to realise that provoke is not a hate generation tool. It only gives you like 10 more emnity then the rest of the
    party. If you lose hate or you die and get raised mid battle is when you use it. I think that people from XI use it thinking it's a direct Enmity spike like XI and can use it for pulling.
    that's what shield lob is for.
