Jobs/classes and how to change them

Ok so I've heard a million times that in order to change jobs....just switch to another weapon and you're good in order to switching desired.job. obviously there's more to it. I can't do this with my guy and wanted to know if anyone can give me a simple crash course on this. Thanks everyone

There is 8 damage dealing classes, getting certain ones to 30/15 will open up a job for example:

30 Puglist & 15 Lancer = Monk

basics:
Classes = gladiator, marauder, lancer, pugilist, monk, conjurer, thaumurturge and arcanist
Jobs = these are advanced 'stances' you classes can adopt, so a gladiator could choose to equip a paladin soul crystal to be better attuned to tanking; and you get the option of doing quests to obtain these crystals when your respective class is at lvl 30. since the job crystal is more like an 'equipment'/'adanced stance', when you level up as a gld, so will you pld, and when you gain exp as a pld, it is actually your gld that is earning exp.

in order to change class, and before you could do that simply by equiping another weapon, you must be enrolled into the guild first. if you started out as an archer, and you wish to be a lancer, you must go to the lancer guild and enroll as a 'trainee' first, and this only becomes available after your starting class has reached level 10 and complete the level 10 class quest.

Awesome I see what you're saying. So how would I switch to another available damage dealing class? I haven't noticed any other classes I can switch to to start working on them

You reach level 10 then you get "permission" to get the other classes. You get those by talking to the guild receptionist of each class who then sends you to the classes guild master. He will give you the weapon you need to switch to that class. Equip that weapon and you can now play was that class.

as i said, you must go to the guild and enroll first.

the lancer guild is in gridania
the pugilist guild is in uldah
the thaumuturge guild is in udah
the arcanist guild is in limsa lominsa

whichever class you wish to become, just go to the guild, talk to the receptionist (s/he should have an exclaimation mark above his/her head, albeit it is not visible on our map). after the initial convo, talk to her again to confirm your interest to join, following which you shall be directed to the guild master, who hands you a weapon; then, equip it, you are then in a new class. talk to the guild master again and you will be given your first quest, and from then on, its just the routine.
