i see people say midge baskets and while they are good i must also say syphrid baskets and rat tails also. if you do not have a high battleclass i wouldn't advise going to brittlebark to fish. they have some grade 6-10 waters in limsa, grid, and uldah. you want 6-10 at this point for grinding although you will only get grade 1 fish out of those waters.
midge baskets yes nawana is the best place to sit and farm those. i'll go and spend a few hours and get 9-10 stacks of baskets and tons of cotton bolls for my weaving. if you do not do weaving nor alchemy you can sell the cotton bolls and puk wings and have a constant supply of gil. those 9-10 stacks are enough to fatigue my fisher with right at 100k sp on a one day fishing grind quite easily.

i lol'd hard.
No its far slower than most other classes.. just a few Reason and maybe you will understand why.
1. You are TIMEBOUND. you cant be faster than the animations.
2. Not every try ends up in a catch.
3. Your average SP is between 80SP -> 240SP
4. Only 2 Leves per City available ( speaking of Rankchoosing ), and only 1 of them is good SP up to 1000+ a Catch.. You can get 3k a Leve but only 1 per City and only every 36 Hours. The other leves are mainly a waste of time since you have to run around and dont get uberSP. Better stay at your spot and Fish.
5. There are no Rank50+ Fishes which makes it boring at some Point, since you will Fish after Grade 5 the same fish again and again... and again.
So please.. if you are not even near HALF WAY of Mastering Fishing you shouldnt talk about Stuff you dont know. It has nothing to do with lazyness, like you said... its more you dont even have an idea how Fishing slows down after 36. Beside that there is Surplus and a Penalty if you fish straight for hours.
I would say look less at what's wrong with fishing and look at once what could be wrong on your end. That is not a flame or meant to be taken as a bash, but somewhere along the line you are doing some incorrectly. Whether your jigging just a bit to far, too little.
More than likely though I would say check your stats, the last patch made fishing more stat based, as it should have been. If you stats are crap for the job then that is probably your issue. I have noticed many lower rank fishers complaining about its difficulty lately and nearly all of them are not using appropriate level rods/gear or have junk stats, I am not saying that is your case, but clearly there is something that you need to fix.
Fishing is perfectly fine as is, there are some tweaks that could be made, but the overall system is fine.
I love fishingsuper fun. I remember when I first started it though it was a little hard for me to grasp. There are many fishing tutorials on youtube that can help ya with fishing tricks, when to jig, etc. Gl!
Protip: your fish wont wait on the line for more than a few seconds if inactivity. If you neglect to jig the line in time, you'll lose your catch,
I was doing the same thing with the bait :P, took me ages to find out what i was doing wrong.
