Yeah I have the same experience. This is one of the first dungeons where dodging and CC is so critical. The less the healer has to heal, the better for the team longevity. Not to mention another common complaint about the dragon breath is that the square is not accurate either that or lag, I've heard many reports of people stepping out of the area and still gets hit. My temporary solution for this "lag" issue is to continuously circle around the boss, as annoying as this may be for lancers and monks, but since you register as already mid-motion you tend to dodge those nasty toxic spews and dragon breaths a LOT better.
I'm a pally as well and I ran that with zero materia in my gear. No issues. They do begin to hit a little harder, but that's just the nature of the beast. I'm sure you're not especially squishy. Just pop your defensive cds when appropriate and don't stand in the fire.
thank you for validating my frustration! I had a nasty PUG also tell me that I had to get better gear. I think this dungeon was just designed to teach you how to dodge, cuz yeah dragon breath hits hard.
Longstop is one of those dungeons where smart play is better than just aoeing. Meaning yes you need to get out of red zones of nastiness yes you will need to pop cd yes your mages/healers should sleep mobs. Using your stun is also helpful in saving your butt. It doesn't get any easier from there. Try doing stone Virgil without a cc. The healer I head in duty finder for the life of her couldn't sleep a target and heal me without a 10sec gap.
Tldr: Use cc, use cds and win
