uh, they did drop PS2 support. the latest expansion cannot be played on PS2...... that is dropping support. kthxuseryourbrain.XI plays on the PS3 only if you have an early release of the console due to backwards compatibility, not because of a 'hack'. And I swear I thought this argument about 'console limitations' had died in a fire. They aren't going to be dropping PS3 support anytime soon, if at all, just like how they haven't dropped PS2 support nn XI in the last 12 years. If it wasn't for Adoulin I'd still be playing the PS2 version (admittedly, on my PS3). I honestly don't get all the hate over having a multiple version game like XI or XIV.
I'd say they'd maybe not publish (at least not disk based) the 2nd/3rd expansion pack upwards on PS3, so say 2-3 years time once Sony have begun winding down PS3 for good.
As for still allowing PS3 users to play, I dont see why they'd suddenly block their console customers from the whole game it would p*ss alot of people off, besides some people cant afford to keep up with hardware cycles and are stuck with last-gen tech for years - I didnt get a PS3 til 2011 since I was poor and outta work, had to make do with PS2.

Same here, I only got PS3 last year and I can't afford to buy a PS4 right in the year of its release, it will take some more time.I'd say they'd maybe not publish (at least not disk based) the 2nd/3rd expansion pack upwards on PS3, so say 2-3 years time once Sony have begun winding down PS3 for good.

EDIT: As for the reason why I can't afford PS4, I don't live in USA or Japan, some people have to buy the console imported so it gets all the import taxes over it(for reference, I got a PSP for 100 dollars from my uncle who lives in USA, same model was almost 200 dollars here where I live). I will probably buy it in a couple of years later, but not right after its release. And some people just can't buy it even in USA, people have different priorities to spend their money.

No, they didn't. If you look at the system requirements on the following site you'll see. Stop being so ignorant of the world outside your country.

Admittedly, this is not the case for non-Japanese as noone outside of Japan saw a PS2 release, but it still happened. Wish I could use a Japanese disk on my game, stupid region lock.Well, I look at it like this. Square will support what they want to support and I'll be glad that they supported it when they did for however long they did. That's all that really needs be said. As for the PS4, not that I can't afford it when it comes out, there are just no games on it with announced dates that make me want to get one. So... why drop $500 on a console I'll not be using for the foreseeable future? I got a launch PS3 not for the PS3 games but for the backwards compatability because my PS2 was getting bad with DREs. I still don't have alot of PS3 games after the few years the console's been out.Funny how everyone has a saying in that.
Noone of you actually asked the support this question am I right?
Well I did and The PS3 Version will be supported as long as the PS3 is supportet by Sony so the Support for FInal Fantasy 14 should stop 2018? not sure. That is why every PS3 account got a PS4 Copy.
Not Lucky enough to get a PS4?
Just need to know the reasion because it couldn't be money, there are enough ways to make money online and offline in real life even if it takes a couple of Month to gather
I am not complaining just funny how everyone thinks they are the Bible of knowledge but no one actually asked the support.. well here you got your answer
Have a nice day

I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.
He who learns but does not think, is lost. He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger.
Well then you are gonna hate the PS4, since there is no intention of adding backwards support at all (and from a security standpoint this is probably a smart decision, since most of the security flaws that allow the consoles to be hacked stem from backwards compatibility).
Thank you this was why I started the thread in the first place. I was looking to see if someone had heard an official response from SE about it. Regarding the cutoff date, if Sony follows MS in this, we could see support by Sony dropped as early as 2016.
Finally, comparing XI to XIV, you should realize that they never made a PS3 version of the game, so they were never going to shift gears, and thus why I believe they supported the PS2 for as long as they did. In this case, you have a PS4 version coming out, they are also giving it away for FREE to those who already own the PS3 version. I am sure in their eyes this is enough to warrant a total future shift to the PS4 and dropping PS3 support. This might allow them to overhaul the engine to add in features like chat bubbles which they said could not be done due to limitations with supporting the PS3.
As of this date, FFXI is still officially supported on the PS2. I know, I have a PS2 with FFXI installed and occasionally update it to keep it running, although I never really play it on there any more.Just thought I would post this to see what people's impression is, and also if anything has been said already. With everyone who bought the PS3 version getting a free copy of the PS4 version, is there any plans to drop (or even limit) the level of support for this game on the PS3 in the future?
I am not at all suggesting they do it this Christmas, heck even 1 year after the release of the PS4 might be too soon... but if this game is planning to go for 10 years... we are going to be very limited on what we will expect to see by way of engine overhauls and updates because of aging technology. Can you imagine still trying to play this game on the PS3 in 2020? By then we might already be on the PS5 (or consoles will have died to be replaced by something else)... Thoughts?
I wouldn't worry about FFXIV's PS3 support going away any time soon.

Why do you think I'm NOT getting a PS4 until such point that a console exclusive game I DO want to play is announced for it? And even then, it would be a weak justification as $60 justifying $500... no way to spin that in a positive light.Well then you are gonna hate the PS4, since there is no intention of adding backwards support at all (and from a security standpoint this is probably a smart decision, since most of the security flaws that allow the consoles to be hacked stem from backwards compatibility).
at some point of the time, maybe after the first expansion, they will need to drop the ps3, why? because of the memory limitation that will block them to add some specific content that will needed for make evolve the game...
do that shock me? no... they will not do it before maybe 2-3 years. and yeah they have support the ps2 version of FF11, but that not the point here. ARR is more demanding in memory and the push already a lot the ps3.
if you don't believe me look around about information link to the memory limitation on the game because of the ps3.
and you have a free copy of the ps4 version in 2-3 years either you have stop to play, or get a ps4 for continue to play...
but it's still really far for be that worried.
