Dropping PS3 Support in the future?

Just thought I would post this to see what people's impression is, and also if anything has been said already. With everyone who bought the PS3 version getting a free copy of the PS4 version, is there any plans to drop (or even limit) the level of support for this game on the PS3 in the future?

I am not at all suggesting they do it this Christmas, heck even 1 year after the release of the PS4 might be too soon... but if this game is planning to go for 10 years... we are going to be very limited on what we will expect to see by way of engine overhauls and updates because of aging technology. Can you imagine still trying to play this game on the PS3 in 2020? By then we might already be on the PS5 (or consoles will have died to be replaced by something else)... Thoughts?

Sure, why not. Makes perfect sense to me. Everyone will buy the new consoles day one after all.

Since they're already pushing the PS4 version, it's almost certain that the PS3 one will be dropped at some point down the road to allow the implementation of more ambitious features.

Extremely doubtful that they will ever drop support for the ps3 users.

How do you think you would feel if you've been playing on ps3 for a few years, and due to your luck you never got around to getting a ps4 or maybe you just preferred the Xbox one instead. What then when they tell you "sorry guys but that game you paid for and all those monthly fee's you paid were great and all, but we regret to inform you that you can no longer log in with your PS3 since we've decided it's too old."

If you honestly think that won't enrage the user base that is on the ps3 then you are quite simply not a student of human nature. Square enix isn't that stupid either. Look at FFXI and you can see that they supported the PS2 almost the entire way despite the fact it hindered the game.

FFXI didn't have a PS3 version. If it did, they'd have pulled the plug much sooner.

They never actually pulled the plug on the PS2 version. They just didn't release the last expansion for the PS2 in NA.

in 2 years, there probably wont be but just a very small percent of players on the PS3 version.... so cool your jets. if you think SE cares about a few percent, you are mistaken.

When it happens, it will be years into the future. SE continued to support the PS2 version of FFXI for 10 years. Only did the most recent expansion for 2013 not see a PS2 release in NA.

Hell, their support of the PS2 didn't even end, it was just that they couldn't do the newest expansion on it because you can't make new PS2 games discs. But yeah, they'll drop support for the PS3 when the servers shut down for good, I'd wager.
