They will continue to monitor who is connecting on which device, and when they deem the user base on the PS3 not worth supporting any more they will drop support.

Well MS has said theyd support the 360 until 2016. Assuming Sony does the same, we only have to put up (trollface.jpg) with PS3 limitations until then... or the first expansion thereafter.
I don't think they will drop it on ps3, FFXI is still supported to an extent on the PS2 and it was what really held the game back. Also this was designed on windows before the PS3. so the ps3 wouldn't exactly hold it back as the windows version will continue to expand and they can just dumb down the settings on the ps3 to make it work.

"Drop support" as in stop releasing expansions, maybe. But barring PS3 users from connecting? What would be the incentive for that?

To put their resources into something more profitable like other ports or ps4 and PC when support ing the ps3 version costs more than it brings in (after a lot upgrade to ps4.)
just curious, do ps3 players even survive large scale fates like odin?
Only due to the systems they had to implement to even get the ps3 to function. I still hold my opinion that continuing to release on the ps3 was the worst decision they made with this game, especially with the ps4 mere months away. It wouldn't be the first time SE has held back a promised title for years only to release it on a next gen console instead *cough* versus xii *cough* you know how many people probably bought a ps3 for that game? Lol.

i hope they will add the game to the ps3 store again soon

Thank you for the responses. I tend to agree that the problem with XI was there was never a PS3 version of the game (to my knowledge there was a hack to get it to work on the PS3... but for all intents and purposes it was still a PS2 game). I guess, I just don't want to see them hold back a feature or capability because they are forced to support hardware that is aging very quickly. With the PS4 and XBOne coming out PC baselines are going to shift. Currently you can still find a large majority of games out there that say minimum requirements of an 8800GTX and a P4 CPU... which is pretty much what the consoles have in them. That baseline is about to shift toward a 580GTX which is a graphical leap of about 4 years, and it might even be pushing closer to the 680GTX. I just don't want this amazing game to be stuck in 2006.
Maybe I am worried about nothing, looking back over other long time games, they have been able to greatly expand the games will still providing support for older hardware (both wow and FFXI are huge examples of this) I guess it would just come down to what they will allow people with good systems to be able to do.
