    Effects of Element Destabilization

This is a thread about what the effects of element destabilization are and how they effect a synthesis. Please post your findings here so we can have an updated list of them.

Edited: Please read Reika's comments as they were the highly more detailed than my notes

(Thankyou Rentahamster, I forgot all about this article on the lodestone)
    A. When an element of a synthesis becomes unstable, the following effects take place respectively:
    Lightning: Progress greatly reduced
    Wind: Durability consumption greatly increased
    Fire: Quality greatly reduced
Ice: Progress reduced, chance of aetherial sparks reduced
Earth: Durability consumption increased, chance of aetherial sparks increased
Water: Quality reduced, chance of aetherial sparks increased

Fire - Heavy Reduced quality gains
Water - Light Reduced quality gains
Lighting - Progress gains limited to 10
Ice - Progress gains limited to 15
Wind - heavy Increased durability loss, random on success, always on fail
Earth - light Icreased durability loss, random on success, always on fail

Any element that goes chaotic will result in 50% quality loss and durability loss.

Reika is mostly correct, with some added details in fact, but there is also two elements that influence Aetherial Sparking, this was all explained in:

    Some notes:

Hand of the Gods will heavily lessen the loss of durability from any element that goes chaotic while under its effect.

Grand Design will always be +30% Progress on normal and good success, even under Ice and Lightning unstable.

Ive only gotten Aetherial sparking during touch ups. so earth ice and water may or may not be doing their whole effect.

I'm not surprised, it's nearly impossible to see sparks using standard synthesis, a tiny bit more probable with bold, and only really shows up when you're using rapid and have lowish control for the recipe's rank.

    Q. What happens exactly when the harnessed element of a synthesis attempt becomes unstable?
