You're almost right.

The only significant sources of Gil creation are the storyline and side quests that people run from 1 to 50. Those quests are the actual source of the income that all those crafters are touting right now. The major issue is that those quests can only be done once per character and there isn't another activity to replace them once they're finished. All the other sources of income (levequests, FATEs, etc.) don't provide enough income to keep up with things like repair bills from doing just about any activity in max-level gear. In other words, it costs you more to run levequests than you make from them.

It would be like paying your boss for the privilege of working at your job.
