The "free" upgrade is going to come at a cost. Sony and Square Enix have dodged this question every single time they could. Is a PS+ subscription required to play FF14 on PS4? If yes, i'm sticking with ps3. I don't need to pay two subscriptions just to be able to play this game thank you.

This is actually a pretty big deal breaker to most of us.

That is not what was said at all. They said free to play online games would NOT require PS+. Pay to play games is really down to the communication betwen the developer and Sony. Sony have said they can allow for pay to play games to not require PS+. Square stated when the PS4 game was announced that this is something they are currently discussing with Sony.

This is because Microsoft needed help entering the Japanese market. They made the deal with Square to be excluded from the Gold membership in order to attract players from PS2 to 360 since PS3 wasn't an option minus a few gen one systems. You could be certain should Microsoft be able to pick up FFXIV that Gold will be required.

And that is why there was no XIV on the 360. Square wanted nothing to do with Microsoft's premium service and still don't because it's a big middle finger being waved in player's faces. Sega had to swallow that pill with PSO on the Xbox and PSU on the 360 because they don't have quite the same clout as Square. There was also Microsoft's demand that XI on the 360 be on it's own servers because of their dislike of Sony's consoles but, again, Square wasn't going to have it. I'm sure Microsoft would have wanted the same over XIV.

Most likely not. All F2P games as well as TESO won't require PS+ to play online so I would assume Square Enix and Sony do the same with this as well.

edit: err scratch that, Bethesda is trying to remove the PS+ requirement, but judging from how Sony is handling things in general, I would assume it's something they would be okay with doing.

I agree with choochoo i highly doubt FFXIV will require PS+, only the regular sub fee

It was already confirmed months ago by Shuhei Yoshida that all PS4 MMO's that have a subscription based requirement wont be required to have PS+
