    crafting is it worth it?

With SE making crafting a class of its own is it really worth while even doing it?

Crafting is ungodly in the amount of time it takes to level up with very little reward.

Yes you can sell your wares on the market at least until people notice that every second side quest gives you your next tier of gear totally free of charge why would any 1 spend there hard earned gil on say a iron lance (lvl 20) when there given it for compleating the lvl 20 lancer class quest why would they buy new armor when the next questing area they go to for the storyline will give it to them?

They can repair there own gear again big deal you can get npcs to do that for you and when grade 3 dark matter (the grade i need to repair my gear) costs just as much as a npc to repair i may as well take the quick option.

The stat diffrence from melding is so insignificant that the next tier gear that you can get for free again from questing will still be better.

They can HQ there gear oh wow a increase in stats thats lets be honest not really needed until endgame.

Then theres the gathering to support your crafting skill which again is a playable class all of its own which is so repeatative its like watching paint dry i guess the only nice part with gathering your can zone out watching tv while you do it.

then theres all the other materials you need to thats crafted by other crafting professions while this is a nice idea but also makes crafting a massive gil sink (unless you level all class's even)

prehaps some of you disagree and i would love you to convince me to carry on crafting because at the moment i just dont see the point of it.

If crafters made the best endgame gear with mats/recipes that dropped in hardmode dungons as well as second best gear it would be a lot more appealing though i think there would be massive fallout with the people that rushed to 50 and have no crafting class

Yes? How would it not be, whether it has its own class or not?

after updating your post; I can agree with you on the concept that late game there really doesn't seem to be much of an advantage to having high level crafting. I believe that there should be as you mentioned some type of tier/grade system just one below what you can get in dungeons, and to make it rather challenging/high cost to make. This would at the very least give players more options in obtaining gear.

As far as making money from it early on - you can do that; I've bought items on the market board crafted by others, and I've sold items I have personally crafted. Some times you don't get something from dungeons and really need an upgrade, some times you just don't like the current gear your wearing and want something which isn't available through quests, or maybe you've already completed that quest and are leveling up another job.

Right now at the current moment, a lot of people are leveling up their very first character and haven't moved on to a second one. So to them they are getting all this gear and thinking "why would I ever need to buy gear from some one else?", but the moment those quests are gone so is the gear you would get from it, and that's where crafted gear from your self or others come into play, and that's when we'll really see the market boom.

I know this is going into a different direction from your topic, but it needs to be said because people will complain about Gil any way - this game is still well into its infancy, and people who are complaining about Gil don't realize that the market isn't supposed to boom immediately, they aren't supposed to be capped out in millions of gil. If any one played WoW they would know that even well into the first year or so of WoW, an average played didn't earn their first gold piece until they were like level 20 or 30 depending on play, that many people who hit 60 were just now getting their normal mount, and that the original 750 for the mount and 250 for the skill were a pipe dream for most. Now, today though, people literally throw away 1k gold like it was nothing - but if you had that much back during Vanilla days you were pretty rich.

Point is, the same thing will happen with this game. So long as people continue to play, continue to do leves, fates, level up new characters, etc. Gil will be pumped into the players wallet, and once quests run dry they have no option but to run dungeons or buy it off the market board, and the market board is way way easier, which will further pump money into the hands of players and economy.

Fun, yes. Worth it, no. It is an amazingly complex, interesting, entertaining system used to make a lot of items no one wants to buy because pretty much anything you can get from a quest reward or an instance is better.

Crafting/Gathering is the single best way to make gold right now.

I find HQ items to be worth crafting. Rather than willingly accepting gear from quests, I prefer to accept coins and then go and make my own HQ gear with significantly better stats. Even now, my first page of inventory is full of HQ gear for my next few levels.

Edit: And yes, I know that's what the armoury chest is for, but I'm forgetful and easily lose things in there, so until it's on my official gearsets it stays in my inventory ;P

I actually buy some crafted gear on the market and turn them in for GC seals. You can find HQ items going for dirt cheap right now, it saves me from trying to farm/craft 8 different class items for multiple supply requests and provides quick exp across multiple crafts. If you make 20 items to vend for 50-100 gil a piece & farm your own mats, that's 1-2k that you didn't have before. Compare that to other MMOs (even ffxi) where you had to lose tons of money to level up. You can also meld your crafted gear for materia which tier II or higher make decent money on. The leveling itself won't make you tons of gil, but it does provide a extra income & costs little to no money to take to 50. It also provides you the ability to repair your own gear instead of dropping 2-5k at level 50 which saves you in the long run. There's also furniture and items for player housing, which will create a market when available and initial prices will be ludicrous before they stabilize to a comfortable level.

keep in mind every relic weapon in the game requires lvl 50 crafted weapons... then tell me if it's worth it.

Pro: You can probably earn enough money to cover your DoW/M repair cost. Maybe materia and relic weapon.

Con: Not much use for anything else since dungeon gear is better and anything of use to DoW/M requires items that can only be obtained by DoW/M: Potash, Hardened Sap, Peacock Ore, Animal Fat, and Coke. Depending on how desperate the other crafters on your servers are you can probably bleed their gil by selling these on the market board which can also help your repair costs.
