    Tanking Frustration: I blame WoW

    I just want to vent to you fellow tanks off an assumption of mine.

    I've recently tanked dungeons with people who obviously aren't strangers to MMO's because of they way they understand dungeoning mechanics.

    However tanking in this game is hard because of how (My assumption) Warcraft evolved tanking to be so faceroll.

    DPS classes I play with automatically start going buckwild on mobs I just pulled (Namely Bards and BLM) before I can even get a Savage Blade or Flash on them.

    These people are so used to faceroll tanking and instant aggro from WoW that it makes tanking frustrating and them rage at me for not having aggro.

    Vent end. Have you guys had similar experiences?

    bind a sign for kill target

    if they still pulling after that hope they have fun tanking

    Thanks for the advice, but like I explained, I'm mostly annoyed at retard DPS who start going nuts on mobs in transit from my shield lob before I can make range for a flash.

    Well, it was actually Everquest Warriors that trivialized tanking (AFK corner tanking anyone?)

    The issues that I'm having, shouldn't even be an issue. I'll use HM Ifrit as an example. I (A warrior) pull with with tomahawk, shortly after tomahawk hits a WMG with regen me. I lose hate, so I provoke / flash. Nope not enough to pull it back, still only at a solid yellow triangle for hate.

    Ok, sure you can toss some blame on the healer regening me as I pull before I have him positioned, but how on earth is provoke not throwing me on top?

    I get fustrated on this too. I even tell the group to wait till they see two flashes from to start going wild. Another annoyance is healers who will cast regen on as you are running in.

    I believe provoke was nerfed because of people abusing it by pulling fate bosses and running away causing a forced reset I think.

    then you should tell them that you cannot maintain threat while they are running away making it impossible to land a melee attack much less a flash and that doing your job will be easier if they just wait for you to be the first to initiate threat on targets

    but trying to be faster than your group could also help you if the problem is frequent

    Not at all!

    I've only experience the best of the best veteran MMO damage dealers! I love it when they:
    • activate Internal Release + Raging Strikes even before I am in range for Shield Lob
    • attack secondary target because, "tanks should not have a problem with threat, l2p"
    • GOGOGOGOGOGOGO and disappear off the mini-map even as the healer starts to cast Protect
    • stand in cleave zone and "lol tank do your job plz"
    and the list goes on. (/sarcasm end)

    Yesterday I was on my Conjurer (just made WHM) and 10 out of 10 archers try to kite in the dungeons when they over-taunt. I feel sorry for them because none of them were anywhere close to half successful.



    Regarding Provoke.

    Provoke literally puts you on top and does a +1 to your enmity. Now there's nothing inherently wrong with that. What's bound to go wrong is the fact that all periodic effects occur based on fixed server times, not based on how long since they were put up. So you can have HealA, HealB, HealC all cast regen on different people at different times, but all three regens will tick at the exactly same time.

    What happens then is that just as you got your +1 enmity, regen ticks and overtakes your enmity again.

    WOW was better in this respect because of the 10%/30% aggro threshold, but FFXIV doesn't have this, so Provoke can fail sometimes if you aren't able to follow up with a real punch (Shield Lob/Tomahawk) immediately.

    The problem is a lot of people have being "spoiled" by recent mmo's

    tanks getting automatic agro and holding it always is ridicules idea if there was no time limit you wouldn't even need dps class's

    DPS class's need to understand that agro management effects everyone if your tanks struggling to hold agro and your going hell for leather and drawing agro step off the gas a little give your tank time to build agro back up

    A game that makes tanks always have agro, well whats the point of dps even having armor
