I'm always watching the enmity meter but sometimes it'll jump from yellow to red. At orange, I pretty much stop attacking (aside from auto). Sometimes even auto attack will pull enmity ahead of the tank. -_-

Keep an eye on the little meter next to your characters name in the party menu, it's a better indication as colour is just based on your position in the hate queue.
