Updated my original post to reflect how I feel about this discussion. All in all I'm quite happy with the responses and player feedback, here's hoping Square-Enix takes this into consideration.

What I want to know is when and why people started asking for devs to sell the community heavily requested game features for additional compensation? *rabble rabble old man voice* Back in my day we just asked asked the devs for features... uphill both ways. *rabble rabble*
Agree with OP. Implement this ASAP
Server transfers I can see but the rest, make it available in game as a gil or seal sink. I am willing to pay a sub because I DO NOT want to have to pay RL money for any in game services or items all this should be included in the monthly fee.
Like I said server transfers are different though it's more a tech thing and is not an in game thing.

It's not very 'techy', the price tag is to stop people jumping servers constantly.
The same would go for appearnce, it flags the character for an edit, simple. The price would discourage people to do it constantly.
Discourage people via a high gil/seal price, like they do for restatting. There is no valid reason to charge RL money in a sub game. I am willing to say ok for changing servers though for various reasons that should be obvious.Changing the "Shioban Mooney is on Aegis" > Transfer Data from Excalibur to Aegis.

I don't mind either way really.
But there is a valid reason, Square Enix are a business trying to make money. This would make them money.
I'm looking forward to it. I'd gladly plop down 20 bucks to be able to freely change my character whenever. It would make me want to play this game even longer knowing I can mix it up every now and then. Right now after seeing a bunch of cute Lalafells in game I want to be a Lalafell for a spell. I think any game that lets you create a character should give you an option to redo your character.
Not sure what a cash shop is as this is my first MMO but paying for an item to change a character's appearance doesn't seem like something to get mad about.
I know that and that is why they charge a sub
Slippery slope is slippery, micro transaction do not belong in a sub game , they belong in f2p micro-transaction game. They want to make money isn't a valid reason as the whole basis of sub games is that there will be no cash shop or such other you have to use RL money to "XYZ".
They charge RL money for anything other than server transfers, if they charge for pets, cosmetics (both appearance or fashion items) name changes, mounts etc etc and my wife and I will drop this like a dirty diaper.
We want to pay sub so we can avoid cash shops whether they be in game or not. Do this and we would no longer be willing to pay for a sub.
Either be a sub based game or not and be f2p, be one or the other not some hybrid con.

I don't quite get why you guys are lumping things like server transfers, character appearance rerolls and so forth into a 'cash shop' mentality. These are extra services that would otherwise not be available in the game, and (ideally) affect one person; the one paying for such services. You do not need to buy any of these services and your game will still play exactly the same as everyone elses, even the people that do opt to use such services.
It isn't like the op is asking for a shop where you can buy boosts that give you increased XP for 24 hours, or increased gil, spirit bonding rate etc. If someone decides they want to go from Lallafel to Miqo'te for a month, does that really impact your experience? Especially if you've never heard of or even seen the person before? Some seriously weak arguments going against minor cosmetic things like this.
If my posts seem short or incoherent, I am probably editing the rest in.
