In any event.. Dark Matter CAN technically be obtained free of charge, via Grand Company seals. The problem is just that you need the crafting classes leveled high enough to repair your own stuff.. And again, this is the grand irony I spoke of.. we never foresaw the problem of NEEDING self repairs to not drown ourselves in debt. Arguably even THIS isn't sustainable though, as you're probably still going to be drowning as a tank class due to the extreme damage you'll be sustaining just to farm the bloody seals.. Other classes might be able to get by better, but it doesn't help the OP who happens to be a tank. Furthermore the time investment to get all the crafting classes capped just to repair your own stuff.. urgh.. That in itself will likely cost a small mountain of gil in its own way, which means in the short term you're just as screwed - if not even MORE screwed financially.

This is nearly impossible a situation.

There's still opportunity cost there, how much value could you get out of those seals if used for something else?

I agree that dark matter should be gatherable.

Is this really an issue? I'm level 48 monk and i barely spend money on repairs i have nearly 150k saved. How the heck do you play that you are constantly spending on repairs? Heck i spend vastly more on teleports!

Hate to say it but could it be... You?

And how are you leveling exactly? FATE's? Yeah unless you're a Tank you're not taking much damage in FATE's to merit a high repair cost usually. If you're questing that'd explain why you have SOME kind of nestegg, but sorry to say that's one-shot gil, none of those are repeatable and that money is all the game really outright hands you. Likewise level 50 gear costs a shit-ton to repair, and once you start doing dungeons you'll see the price for repairs going up and up.. So unless you have some secret to making gil the rest of us aren't in on, yeah, that nestegg of yours isn't going to last as long as you might think.

Yeah. When I was around Lv48 I had about 100k gil after spending a lot on black and white dyes and some other fancy things. Now I'm down to 20k and the money I make from doing FATEs and dungeons is nothing close to what I spend in repairs. One run of CM costs about 1000g if I don't die at all.

Yoshi really likes his gil sinks. That's the only reason I can think of why this was removed.

Or maybe you just don't know how to make money? I'm still sitting above 200k gil as it is after running countless amdapor keeps, and as a Paladin im sure you know that means I die at least 3x more then anyone else.
Even after buying Relic weapon Materia this is not an issue.

I don't think people understand that economies don't just start out perfect, it takes time and work to settle. And for all you people complaining about not introducing gil? Well, guess you better start using your guild levels and fishing.
