Same x.x I get all happy to see that I just made some gil from something finally selling, only to realize, all of that is going to my repairs (2k-3k usually) :/ It doesn't help that half the crap you do put up on the market, gets undercut like crazy within an hour. I remember seeing this one item going for 8k, so I put mine up for 7950. Went out, did some dungeons, came back, thing was 500 gil. You'd also think crafting would be a way to make gil, but with a 23 bsm, usually I spend more money than I actually make because none of the stuff I can make up to (up to lvl 24 gear?) sells for like 50 - 200 gil

My apologies then. I thought you were speaking of your own funds rather than the economy as a whole.
Still, try a gathering class. I've found them pretty fun. You can also get Allagan pieces from the guild quests, which will help introduce more gil into the game.

Gee, I wonder if any professions have the ability to repair gear. Hmm

Your observations are astute and your contribution to this thread is profound.

That costs gil too, more gil than you make. AF and higher ilvl becomes very expensive to repair.

You can only repair your own gear, and the material needed is only available from vendors. In addition it requires you level that class with the associated costs.

So much for saving up for my house. These repairs after Garuda are draining me dry. :\

Unless there is something I'm missing, if you repair your own equipment it'll be more expensive but that money is going to a player that farmed the materials you need instead of some NPC. I thought the big complaint was about money leaving the economy, not player-priced items being expensive.

Edit: oh is dark matter only available from vendors?

The one thing I really miss from 1.0 is being able to fix other people's equipment. This, I feel really needs to be implemented. Repair costs can go over 5,000 the higher your item levels. I would repair even if i only made 10% of what is paid to the NPC. And make Dark matter easily attainable.

The grand irony here is.. This is half our own fault.
Yoshida asked everyone during the earlier days of 2.0's development whether we wanted to universally be able to repair our gil via any crafting class, or if we wanted it to be as we know it now in the game.. It was an overwhelming landslide that repairing gear would be class specific based on the gear type. We kinda shot ourselves in the foot there, and I must confess as well, I was one of the people to vote for the way it is now.. However, none of us could have foreseen the gil costs required to repair things, or perhaps not the "cost" itself, but the lack of any way to generate a survivable income.. Had any of us realized this, we likely would have not voted the way we did..
