It would be super hilarious if they were using fishing RNG and the presence of fish that are used in crafts that have a less than 15% chance of being obtained to see who would actually tolerate such systems. Then they will justify nerfing all other gathering classes to be the same. People who settle for shit RNG systems can make it happen.
Hell, during beta the gathering system for botanist and miner was just about a complete gamblers system in the first place. I bet they really want a reason to change it back to that.

It makes perfect sense that we can select what we harvest as Botanists because we can see what we are trying to harvest. The V1.0 system was horrible and we couldn't be more happy with the change to the system even if it does allow for an overflooded market. But since I only harvest for myself and friends and don't ever sell stuff on the MB it isn't an issue for me. There is no reason for a nerf to our system.
There is a very good reason to boost the fishing though by making lure/bait more exclusive. Real life fishing you can chose bait/lure that certain fish like and you will get that fish often but you will always get that stupid fish that you didn't want. They just need to increase percentage of the selected fish and decrease significantly the % of the other fish in the area based on lure/bait.
I might be late to this discussion but I have been able to isolate specific fish by using lures. Unfortunately I cannot isolate economically worthwhile fish or I would remember the exact name and place. Crecent Cove was where I first discovered it. Spotted puffers can be isolated by using mythril spoon lures or spinners, I suspect lower level flashy spoon lures too.
I was just discovering new fishing holes and seeing what bit, rotating through lures and bait.
You can weight your choices too. Several lures / baits will land Hammerheads in the Silver Bazaar but heavy iron jigs get the ratio of hammerheads / junk fish. Fishing for Red Coral in outer Sahaginistan the sinking minnow has a better catch rate than the heavy iron jig. (This is a good thing, I hate jigging while stealthed.)
Yea fishing is a bitch unless you want silver sharks or something with a low level base fish

Yeah, I find fishing causes a lot of inventory troubles. I was trying to do a GC provisioning mission and found the most convenient place to catch La Noscean Perch was just outside of Summerford Farms. It sounded like I might have the best luck with the Chocobo Fly, but I was only lv. 20. In any case, I sat there fishing with lv. 15 bait just west of the Farms and I kept getting stuck with random crayfish, chub, and dwarf catfish, both NQ and HQ. There are six fish in that river, which means I need to have 13 open slots to cover the NQ and HQ (you can't fish with no empty slots), or continually manage my inventory. Why do I randomly catch lv. 2-4 fish when using lv. 15 bait? It's ridiculous!

It's funny I came here to seek advice of my Fishers to what bait to continue to hold or not and I find this.. This is slightly discouraging. So many tackles and lures. I was hoping that at 50 I would have a better understanding which bait which location greater chance of isolating a specific fish. No such luck for me. It's really eating my bag.
On an additional silly side note, I'd love to suggest to Square an off hand for Fisher.. Militia Tackle box? Something to keep my lures in. I think that would be nice. It could step up in room as you get a higher lvl one.
oh yeah I'd love to have a tackle box, or maybe a fish box too so I don't have to sell all my fish to the vendor.
with regards to baits I found that unless it's a specific bait for a specific fish (which you can look up from xivdb or somewhere similar), usually the level and description match the results pretty okay. mooching is also a life saver and you get many of the profitable fish by mooching.
Given that you have godly gear, how often do you get HQ fish? For miners and botanist, max base chance is 15%. Is it something similar for fishers?

We unfortunately don't have HQ rate statistic conveniently visible in character's stats window. I would say the chance is about 20% all the time. But it really depends on the place and probably the level of the fish caught. Sometimes I got 5 HQ fish in a row. Sometimes it's about every other fish is a HQ fish. Sometimes I get 5 fish without a HQ. And we cannot spend GP to boost HQ rate like Botanist and Miner. So it's mostly just luck and how high you can pump up your Perception.
