Fishing seems pretty time consuming, more so then I really wanted. Tracking down all the different locations, fish, baits, ect... I have done some leves for fishing, but it seems like I spent 20+ minutes just trying to get 3 of the same fish, I always catch something different.


To add to this, in the fishing guide and fishing log there is no reference to what bait works for what. I really wish there was a single line in there that said "anchovy prefers worm bait."

Its just kind of tough figuring stuff out with very little in game information being given.

A Level 3 Fish will bite for Lv1 or Lv5 Bait of the appropriate Ocean/Freshwater type.
A Level 8 Fish will bite for Lv5 or Lv10 Bait of the appropriate Ocean/Freshwater type.

Each Bait tells you what its for: Freshwater or Ocean fishing.

Yes, quit fishing. It's useless.

It's how it is designed, it is up to you to try out different baits and see what you can get. You also get new mechanics to fishing as you level up so you may need to return to a previous spot and see if you "unlocked" a new fish.

If you are targeting a fish specifically, it's on you to remember what bait you used.

But yea, take a look at the bait descriptions. Some bait have traits that state they are made for larger fish, some go after fish that lie deeper in the ocean, so you can figure out good bait to use by reading the fish descriptions and the bait descriptions and putting two and two together.

Also when you get lvl 25 in fishing you get the ability to mooch which means you are able to take a HQ smaller fish like a Goby and use it as bait as well to catch bigger and more rare fish. I certainly wouldn't recommend stopping... yes it is time consuming but in the higher levels and with the rarer fish you can some good money which as you can tell on other threads gil is hard to come by.

Yeah I noticed after reaching level 10, the experience sky rocketed. Mostly thanks to catching tons of HQ fish which give 300% bonus exp, and getting triple the amount of fish required for leves. A lot of leve quests allow you to turn in the required items 3 times in a row for the exact same leve before it finishes it.
