There is a retainer like in v1 but the system has changed alot, much easier to use. There is no mog houses but there will be instanced player housing cities with the first patch, it will be 100 times better than mog houses. Deliver boxes are replaced with the delivery moogles in each city. Basically forget about what you remember from v1, this is a new much better game that you should try.

And for your retainer you need to do a story quest around level 20.
