Does it Help or Hurt to Help on Another's Target?

I have been helped at times with difficult enemies by chance or random players. And at times i have tried to help others who looked like they were in trouble but i have worried that i may have been stepping on their game play and intruding. Is it bad to help someone else defeat an enemy if you dont take it over or try to steal it? I thought that the original or first attacker always gets 100 percent no matter who helps but was not sure? can anyone help advise on this for i dont want to be a game thief..and i do like to help others when i can.

there are a few places where the enemy may be at the top end of a Hunt Log, and very hard for one to kill at current level and those i have tried to help others get once i got past them myself.

but i wanted to ask for thoughts on this. thanks.

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I noticed that if someone helps you kill a monster, both of you get credited for the kill. I know this because it's happened both ways for me:
    - I joined in on a monster someone else was attacking, and was credited with the kill in my hunting log/quest requirements, despite me not striking the last blow.
    - Someone else joined in on a monster I was halfway killing, and I was credited with the kill as well.

I believe you have to do enough damage to it, to be credited with the kill.

On the other hand, I am just simply insecure about not getting my credited kill, because someone else joined in on my monster. Just disproved insecurity, and nothing more however.

I've not seen anyone called out on this however, so I assume it's something perfectly acceptable...

I've found that you can help others complete hunting log kills even without being in their party. last night I helped someone complete a few kills for the hunting log without partying up. I figured it worked cus after we killed the 3 he needed, he thanked me and left.

If you have claim on a mob, you and your party will always gain full credit (exp, drops, hunting log, quest progression, etc) regardless of how much damage you deal to it.
If you help kill a mob claimed by another player you need to deal a certain amount of damage to get partial credit (exp, hunting log, etc, but no drops).
There is no way to steal a kill in this game, unless you pull hate and drag it out of it's spawn area, causing it to reset, but that's just being a dick. If people complain about you helping them, educate them on this, it hurts nobody to help kill other's mobs.

So far I've never NOT gotten credit after I got in the first hit (mob's bar turns red) and someone joins in, be it for quests or hunting logs or simply xp.
If I don't get the first hit (bar is purple) then I don't always get credit, if I had only gotten one hit in, but most of the time even that's enough now.

I'm a white mage myself, so whenever i see someone fighting a monster and looks like (s)he's losing the battle or at least is having it difficult, i would cast a regen plus a stoneskin and then wait till they have killed it. I would even put my weapon away just to be sure that i won't auto attack it. It's like what the people above have said already.

The game has been set up in a way that who ever tags the mobs will always get the credit and the loot. Anyone else will have to deal enough damage to gain credit for the kill, next to the person who has tagged it. Only Guildleve monsters cannot be attacked if you are not part of the party of the person who has started the Guildleve.

So, in a manner of speaking, if there aren't enough unclaimed monsters in the area, it's ok to attack another persons target in a way that the both of you will get the credit for the kill. But, keep in mind that not everyone will appreciate it.

thanks for all the great advice. Yes i want to be very very careful, i never want to interfere with someone's game. I think i may hold back unless it looks like somone is really in danger or close to dying..and then i may help, or ask if they want it. I have been thanked several times and once someone lured the target i was attackng away and basically took it ..but i didnt make a big deal over it there are plenty of everything all over, just have to keep looking but i do appreciate the advice. I am playing on a Japanese server and not all of the players there are fluent in english and I am not as fluent in Japanese as i would like to be ...so i want to be extra careful. thanks again all, and do appreciate the help. Now that i have heal skills from my Conjurer second class i can help heal others too which is nice, and I do appreciate it when healers help heal us in a FATE that is very nice to see people working together i always enjoy that.

I will look for other ways to help out, maybe stand by at spots where you die in hard class quests and do some healing to help people keep going in them.

I think there's no harm in helping. You should just avoid doing TOO much damage, since I'm not sure the other person will then get experience.

So long as the person you are helpign has done sufficient damage to the mob to be credited with the experience/log entry then I believe it is okay to help. The only times it gets my nerve up is when its a 10+ level above me and takes the mob away from me or 1-hit KOs it.

There's no harm in helping others, especially if they're close to dying. I will stop what I'm doing at times to help someone with difficult enemies, and then take my leave when the mob is within range of them finishing it without worrying.

The only problem i have with helping, is when people expect you to help them. To often have I been doing a quest in which you force mobs to appear(the hostile presence type stuff), and a player shows up assists me, and then sends me angry tells because I didn't stick around to assist them. If you ask me to help, i'm happy to help, but don't expect me to help you just because you helped me without me asking you.
