I've actually wondered about this myself. I see plenty of regular ways for gil to exit your hands (teleport costs and repair fees), but few ways for the gil to actually reliably enter your hands.

I started crafting Goldsmith and Armorer, and while I've made a bit of money off them, it's still largely insignificant in the grand scheme of things, and was an EXTREME time sink, and that was by actually being largely self-sufficient with mining. Level 22 miner, 21 Armorer, and 27 Goldsmith, and while the money isn't going down, it certainly hasn't went up significantly enough to justify the time required, and again, I was almost entirely self-sufficient.

Running dungeons isn't anywhere near a reliable source of income. In fact, I'd wager to say it's almost certain to cost you more money versus gained (and the XP isn't good either).

Levequests are... decent, but quite draining.

FATE's - Not even decent, and also draining.

Questing - Thus far, easily the BEST means of acquiring money. Unfortunately, they're one-off chances, as the original thread states, so it's not a reliable source for FUTURE gil - you can only milk that cow once, and once you drink the milk, it's gone for good.

I'm just coming up short on ways to keep gold in the economy without draining it as quickly as it currently is being drained. I'm sitting on 60K gil right now, and feeling like Rich Uncle Pennybags, just because I refuse to spend it, and with good reason - with the way things are going and the speed money leaves the system, people are going to be broke quite soon, and what seems like little money now will be quite valuable soon.

That's not true anymore, doing a dungeon run at level 50 will most often give me a profit. I get 7-14 bronze allagan pieces per run when we track down every coffer, 7 alone will cover my repair bills and give me some left overs.
Not to mention doing leves will net you a huge amount of gil if you do it daily. As for DoH, just hold out, do not be afraid of paying out a little of your gil to get it leveled up, the early levels will be a pain and probably give you a gil loss but as you get higher level, it will turn into a profit and really shine at level 50 when you get decent gear and can HQ almost every low level item and sell them for a nice amount on the market. Also, as I mentioned before, turn in triple tradeleves at level 50 to give you a huge amount of gil, makes DoH the true money maker in this game.
