What I was doing was to open the crafting log and everything I forgot to switch to "armed mode" with L3 after starting a craft I had to quit it if I forgot to witch. Just press R1+button and you are all ready to craft!!
lol. your not dumb... sometime people forget things. I switch between crossbars all the time using the R1+button to organize my sets, so I'm just really use to it. LOL!
