That line is drawn on the water. Final Fantasy is not so much about traditions as it is about experimentation. Context is especially important. White Mage, Paladin and Black Mage wouldn't have made sense in the futuristic FFXIII, so they were named Medic, Commando and Ravager instead. In Dissidia the classes are different as well. Warrior of Light is a "Paragon", Garland is "Nemesis", Onion Knight is "Mystic Fencer", Cecil is "Split Soul", Terra is "Esperkin", Squall is "Relentless Revolver" and so on and so forth. Yet what is important is how these classes are realized in-game, not what their name is. Very few FF games use the traditional names nowadays and even before, even if their primary purpose remains the same throughout the franchise.

Similarly, here "Paladin" doesn't fit the Colosseum-esque lore of Gladiator, nor does "Monk" fit the Gambling nature of Pugilist. It has to tie in with the context, otherwise it makes absolutely no sense. FF series has been exceptionally good at not having aspects in their games that simply don't fit in the lore.
