Why make things more messy just because it's unique? The game still needs a dedicated healers (WHM), tanks (WAR) and nukers( BLM). Their purpose in battle is going to be the same no matter how you dice it but you still want to hold onto misleading class names? A nuker that can't heal and has weak physical attacks is still a BLM no matter what you call it in a FF game. If you want to name your BLM something else then please do so on Besaid in your RP group but all the rest of us should be able to tell you're a BLM just by looking at your gear and invite you to groups accordingly. (oh the last bit doesn't make any sense if you think of XI but anyway I hope BLMs are going to be more useful than in that game)

    Let's use your example:

I know zero about star wars so if I seen multi colored Lightsabers I'll just assume they're just different colored sabers with no meaning, yet I can guarantee someone who KNOWS more about star wars will gladly "correct" me in saying they're held by different rank/entities of the Jedi which generally means they're of a different skill level or position, correct?

Final Fantasy isn't the only series out there, but it is one of the most referenced series just like when someone talks about Sci-Fi they proclaim "Star Trek" or "Star Wars" yet they're clearly not the only Sci-Fi series out there.

That line is drawn on the water. Final Fantasy is not so much about traditions as it is about experimentation. Context is especially important. White Mage, Paladin and Black Mage wouldn't have made sense in the futuristic FFXIII, so they were named Medic, Commando and Ravager instead. In Dissidia the classes are different as well. Warrior of Light is a "Paragon", Garland is "Nemesis", Onion Knight is "Mystic Fencer", Cecil is "Split Soul", Terra is "Esperkin", Squall is "Relentless Revolver" and so on and so forth. Yet what is important is how these classes are realized in-game, not what their name is. Very few FF games use the traditional names nowadays and even before, even if their primary purpose remains the same throughout the franchise.

Similarly, here "Paladin" doesn't fit the Colosseum-esque lore of Gladiator, nor does "Monk" fit the Gambling nature of Pugilist. It has to tie in with the context, otherwise it makes absolutely no sense. FF series has been exceptionally good at not having aspects in their games that simply don't fit in the lore.

Yep, which his why we're getting a different system to complement it rather than just merely changing a name.

I'll go ahead and update you just based on the KOTOR lore i know

When a Jedi first construct their lightsaber they are drawn to a lightsaber crystal that resonates with their own Force Energy. The color of this crystal is usually similar to the color of the type of Jedi they are. Jedi Knights are Light Saber Specialists and gravitate to Blue, Jedi Consulars were masters of the Force and prefered using force powers over the Light saber, they gravitate to green.

After KOTOR most of the caverns where light saber crystals could be found had be stripped clean and new jedi had to Forge a crystal using their own force powers. Luke Skywalker did this.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

And thank god for that. They still have to make them make sense, but at least they won't simply change Gladiator into a Colosseumladin and call it a day.

That's is what I was trying to say all along. That's why they don't name it that way, not in the lore nor in the games and other products.
Blue mage doesn't have any meaning to me as a newcomer to the Final Fantasy series, that's why I'm dissappointed when they use it as a name.

Maybe it is one of the most referenced name in the fantasy genre of games, but it isn't an excuse in my eyes to force dull and meaningless names like colored mages down people's throat, whether they are new to the genre or not.

No, They named them Jedi Knights and Jedi Consulars because thats the LORE OF THE FRANCHISE. LOLS BRILLIANT CONCEPT
Now let's be honest a name such as jedi knight or jedi consular even outside of that lore makes more sense than colored mages...
And I think I said this before in the thread but don't bother abusing capslock since my eyes are good enough to read.

I find names such as blue, red or black mage personally kind of dumb. Since it doesn't say anything about the class. Thaumaturge has actually a meaning, maybe you knew that if you have bothered to look it up.
Black Mage = Black Magic. White Mage = White Magic. I'll give you Blue Mage but the other two say more about the class than the current names....who the hell even knew the word Thaumaturge existed before this game??? get real man. And on top of this, FFXI didn't create those names, they've been in plenty other FF titles too. This said I don't really care for a name change but your reasoning can be better.

It doesn't make any sense to me. I know what dark magic means, because it supposed to be all evil and heretic like.
So what should I picture with red magic or blue magic?
All I have been trying to say is that I find the names a bit disappointing and vague and wouldn't recommend it for a mmorpg.

    It worked for FFXI though:
    http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/White_Mage
    http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Black_Mage
    http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Red_Mage
    http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Blue_Mage

These designs have pretty much been their staple appearance throughout the series, Blue Mage having different designs since they're different in each game but generally the same concept. The names of FFXIV may make sense to the west, but they're generic and tasteless in the original version which is why the naming was proposed in the first place, especially because throughout the game's history everything is linked to certain jobs, like Dual Cast was the main trait/spell/ability of a Red Mage.

That was what the problem with FFXIV, instead of having defined classes, we were all basically freelancers who use different weapons.

    Also, Dark Magic:
    http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Dark_Knight

It's not on the same level as Black Magic, but it is their unique spell line. That's why I say it's nicer to know the lore and history of things so it would make sense, because outside of FF a lot of stuff doesn't make sense, just like to non star wars fans, the only thing people know are: "Luke, I am your father." As it's heavily referenced and parodied throughout all time.
