First off, grow up. I'm using caps for emphasis, not for screaming. If you want to debate the uniqueness of Thaumaturge over any of the classic FF mage names, that's fine. Thaumaturge essentially means magic user, magician, a catch-all. The fact that it's actually in the dictionary just goes to show how generic it is.So replacing generic names with other generic names is a good thing to do in your opinion? And I haven't said anything about names such as gladiator. I have only talked about the name thaumaturge versus names like red mage, blue mage, etc. So don't try to change my words or message.
ps: If you want me to take you seriously cut the capslock thing, it's really unnecessary..
Again, there is nothing generic about Red Mage, White Mage, Black Mage, etc. They are unique because they were created by Hironobu Sakaguchi.
I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

Little Known Fact. They were created by Tanaka. :P

Just because he came up with them doesn't mean they are great names. If the Japanese ones are so great then why don't we come up with new ones for English or change the current Japanese ones from the *terribly* bland ones we have now? Also the job Conjurer currently is functions more like Scholar from FFXI. I don't think we can just tack a classic name on it if it doesn't fit the bill.First off, grow up. Did you enjoy all the fun ways of showing emphasis that don't involve Caps Locks, thus potentially misconstruing the meaning of your sentence?

The Classes in XIV are generic because all they are supposed to be is your weapon. Gladiator = Sword, Pugilist = Knuckles, Marauder = Axe, Archer = Bows, Lancer = Lance, Conjurer = Circle AOE, Thaumaturge = Cone AOE.
You learn skills by using weapons then mix and match the skills together to make up your own Character not a class or job.
They already said they will be implementing the Classic FF Jobs to instill a sense of Role for players should they chose. And make it easy for other players to identify that "Hey that Gladiator is a Thief, not a Paladin."

Oh I know, I was just giving an alternative to their idea under a worst case scenario that the renamed the base classes for some silly reason. I posted the idea of branching off into specialization classes/jobs on Zam like 3 months ago, I've been on board with the concept before they even mentioned it.The Classes in XIV are generic because all they are supposed to be is your weapon. Which all comes down to being adherent in the magic class (red, black, white, blue) when prior to FF mainstream wise, you've never heard of different type of mages, you've heard of Mage or Elf or Thaumaturge, Magician, Druid etc. I'm biased, but it is a lot more creative than "Sword user".

Yeah, I remember Tanaka and I Think either Komoto or Yasu talking about how they were trying to create a title system that identified you for a Classic Job name based on what your weapon and skills were.
I'm hoping whats coming is an evolution of that. a Basic title system that grants a Title and then bonuses for if you maintain a skill loadout that matches the title but still allows the customization from the Armoury System.

ok i realize now the ignorance in the original post so lets change the question from what class name you would like, to what specific job names you would like and maybe how you think they should parse the jobs to differentiate a "gladiator into jobs like a thief or paladin."
would it be good to have the different jobs automatically selected through what skills you have equipped or
would it be better to have the choice be presented at like level 20 "choose your job" and have it differentiate that way.
what would people like better?
