so far nobody can confirm what I've heard so maybe there's nothing to it >< which renders airships pretty much useless in this game so far.

I think they should hike up the prices of Teleports, and that way people will rely more on the Chocobo porters. Its possible to go from Ul'Dah to Gridania in under 5 mins and cost about 100 gil..plus you get to look at the landscape, go make a cup of tea, or wc break as you do so! Might make people appreciate the game world more too.
"Your former glories and all the stories, dragged and washed with eager hands..but oh your city lies in dust my friend!"
I don't think the prices to use the teleport need to be raised any higher than they are. As it is, I've been having a ton of fun being completely scatter brained and going from area to area leveling crafting and gathering professions on random whims. The one thing that holds me back is the high price, at least for lower levels, of transportation options complicated by reports of gil acquisition actually getting MORE difficult after you complete the main story.
I really think the only change that needs to be made is to allow the choco-porters to enable you to travel to any choco-porter destination you've unlocked a route to. I.e. instead of having to speak to 2 or 3 choco porters to get from Gridania to Ul'Dah, once I've unlocked the required choco-stops along the route, I can be in Gridania and just choose Ul'Dah as a destination.

I already use chocoporters, they are the cheapest way to travel.I think they should hike up the prices of Teleports, and that way people will rely more on the Chocobo porters. I dont recall hearing about them making it like XI but what I do recall was then adding random FATE's to the airship rides. How that will work I'm not sure, but It sounds better than a boat ride just to waste time. We dont need pointless time sinks in this game and that would be one of them. just my opinion.
You could still use your teleports and bypass it all together if you wanted. But it would add things to the game that many others would enjoy such as being able to fish on the ferry, cloud fish on the airship, experience random encounters, and have more immersion in an MMO that would make it feel more like a living breathing world by having actual travel time... many people like that, and the cost of having a cheaper cost for travel (cheaper than teleports) would be the fact that it takes time to travel... I think that's pretty fair.I dont recall hearing about them making it like XI but what I do recall was then adding random FATE's to the airship rides. Yes, as Zakarn mentioned, I believe there's been talk of adding slow-travel with FATEs to the game eventually. That said, they hadn't worked out what sort of FATEs to implement, so there was no timeframe for that to actually be completed and added into the game.

This actually sounds great to me. I doubt it would get used very much because of this new "do everything as fast as possible" community, but still..
I have to admit I haven't used the airship often because it only saves about 100 gil and takes more time than that 100gil is worth to me.
I would use it occasionally if there was an airship zone though. I imagine a lot of role players would use it just for a chat lobby.
Additional note: if there are rare mob spawns like on the Selbina ferry then I AM SO THERE!
