8 Man Content - Two Tanks

As I have not personally experienced 8 man content yet, my specific question is what is the point of having two tanks on content where there is only one boss, such as the Primals? Are there mechanics where two tanks need to absorb damage (like Patchwerk in WoW) or is incoming damage so great that you need to Provoke off one another?

I know Garuda had copies that spawned during 1.0 so you needed a second tank, but Ifrit and Titan seem to primarily be a single mob fight, from what I've seen of the normal modes anyway.

So basically, why would you want two tanks on these encounters with only one target?

Ifrit needs two tanks since one tank holds the boss and the other stuns eruption
Garuda needs 2 tanks to hold one of the cloes
Titan does not need new tanks, and they really need to change it so that the DF only gives you one tank, since right now there is a serious lack of damage dealers in groups because one slot is being taken by a tank

Several of the final dungeons are filled with bosses needing two tanks and the trash pulls are balanced around two tanks. There is a lot of very enjoyable content for team tanking.

If you made a group on your own server, could you not bypass needing the second tank and put in another damage dealer with stun capabilities?

If you make your own group you could go with no tank. I single tank Ifrit HM for some of our runs. You don't "need" the 2 tanks for any of the primals honestly but it does make it easier on Ifrit and Garuda

Thanks, this is the answer I was looking for. I'm probably going to primarily run level 50 stuff with my FC so I just wanted to know how flexible we could be with our party makeup rather than using the standard that the Duty Finder builds for you.

Ifrit isn't really that difficult at all if people have any ability to button, and while there are certainly many ways to work out stunning Eruptions, a competent PLD remains probably the least stressful option, so from that perspective, 2 tanks are still worth thinking about. PLD can just park in Sword Oath and once they know the pattern for Eruptions, they can mostly DPS and everyone else can forget about stunning entirely.

Titan's the only thing I know of at the moment which doesn't really benefit from having 2 tanks (either in terms of needing 2 for mechanics or because a PLD makes for an excellent stun whore). Naturally, if ARR Tribe is anywhere near as competent as XI Tribe, I doubt stun orders and a single tank will be a major issue for various content.

You could, but it's not a hard fight, and PLD is just the easiest option. Stun on other jobs is on a long cooldown whereas PLD is just on the GCD.

There is a video of Titan hard using only one tank, and 3 healers. Garuda kinda sorta needs 2 tanks, even tho the sisters don't do nearly as much damage as Garuda.

After that video, Idk about doing Titan with less than 3 healers. Was doing some massive AOE damage towards the end with rapid stomps. I think using duty finder for titan will just lead to fail all the time, because it doesn't have an optimal party setup.
