Is there any benefit to having someone walk to a different ward to get it? It certainly does not require skill, promote community, or any other benefit. As it is right now, it is just the system. But if you were to actually change the system to make it easier, then pay people to walk the distance, it would seem to me to be a time sink for the sake of being a time sink.. Nothing positive brought to the table.

I normally like all your posts, or at least how you present your ideas, so I am hoping you can explain why you see this as a positive because I feel I am missing something.

Because if the players are forced into the Wards theres a higher chance of Window Shopping. Where a player finds an item they were not actually looking for and buying it. If the players never go through the wards they never impulse shop either.
Theres other reasons in the back of my head but I'm not sure the best way to describe them currently.
