I understand the problem with Gladiators compared to Marauder as there isnt much to draw in the mob from a distance. What you can try instead are one-use items such as bombs where you then select an area on the ground nearby the mobs you want (also useful if there is more than one and you dont want them straying to the DD/Heal roles
