ranged attack on every monster?

I understand its an anti exploiting mechanism but

A) why bother with snares/roots
B)it looks really silly when everything in the world has some sort of ranged attack (this drives me crazy in CO too)

People want the game harder not easier,and difficulty comes in many ways.
