I'm like the annoying healer that hangs out in the tank forums.
A quickie if you're tanking, that Shield Oath is absolutely lovely on my MP supply too. But I do hope you find ways to weave Sword Oath into your adventures.

As i said it's entirely situational mostly i switch in after i get a good hang of the bosses patter if he has one, or after ability where i know the whm can have a easier time healing whatever increased damage i take during those 30 seconds, tanking is all about being aware of the whole situation. not just the amount of enmity to generate, so it's good to have other classes inputs on the thread
(no use having the increased enmity if the whm has to pick up with overheals to maintain me alive, it just nullifies any extra enmity i will generate since the healer wlll have to compensate himself generating needles enmity, however i do think if timed and used right it is a great way to boost the pld's tanking form

That being said, you're right about timing it. As a White Mage, I've noticed certain lull periods where everyone is topped off and Stoneskin is up on the tanks. It's during these times, that I may dare switch to Cleric's Stance and cast a few spells. I suspect it is during this same window of opportunity that you'll be able to use Sword Oath with minimal consequence and contribute to ending the fight sooner.
And also as you says, getting the hang of bosses and encounters to recognize these moments to take advantage of them may be part of improving Paladin performance.
