First off, I wanna say "FU D&D nerds!" I really wanted to see crafting and gathering classes to be able to participate in battle, not just parley with the enemy. You can do plenty with a needle and thread such as: poison needles, cut off limbs with thread, and slice your throat with piano wire. Getting hit with goblin frying pan was fun and pretty funny back in ffxi, and I want to be able to do the same thing. Maybe I'll make a mech that I can ride to battle and run around as blacksmith, or maybe make a mechanical puppet as goldsmith and become like a puppet master. Maybe make catapults as carpenter. Alchemists can use guns, make bombs, and throw vials of anthrax. This will bring in that uniqueness and fun element that's much needed in this game. Just because we don't carry a sword, a bow, or a lil gay wand doesn't make us less capable of being in battle.

It's fine the way it is now. A swordsman can still be a good fisher, he has to eat right?
I think you are asking for something you don't have to ask for. Ofcourse they are making the Garlean empire storyline for combat classes, but don't kill the armory system by making gathering and crafting only able to fight with fishing rods and needles. That's just stupid.
There is no problem as of right now with that. So don't go looking for "solutions".
OK I think you are missin the point. I am not saying that crafters/gatherers cant participate in battle by pulling out your battle class, or that you should be stuck as a crafter or gahterer. You are reading more into it than was necessary. I just don't want crafters the way they CURRENTLY are to be expected to do main storylines and battles as a crafter or gatherer. It only leads to the battle mechanics being dumbed down to include crafters and gatherers. If your main is a Weaver, and you want to pull out your Lancer to fight in battle related content, then by all means go right ahead.

LOL I think your post is funny. Dont misunderstand me, I am not making fun, it was just entertaining. But thats why I included option 1. While I personally think option 2 is better, option 1 could be fun and quite comical. I too wouldnt mind seeing a Culinarian bash a mob upside the head with a frying pan.

I think the main reason they pulled the DoL/DoH abilities to fight was they realised that they would be putting traditional classes back in the game and the DoL/DoH classes used a lot of their abilities like Miner being a THF type class with Treasure Hunter and Steal.

The DoL/DoH classes could be viable in combat I suppose. Miner uses a Pickaxe, Botanist uses a Scythe (DRK ^^), Fisher has a Spear too. Alchemist could make potions and buffs, Culinarian has a knife as well and could buff with food all sorts of thing really. Would have been interesting to see at least.

I'd still like to hear more feedback on this issue. My idea might not be perfect, but I am at least attempting a solution. If someone has a better solution, then by all means please speak up.
