We all know what kind of AH we're talking about.

Sure - it wants to do that fine. However, that seems like an astronomical waste of space that could be used for a hell of a lot more useful things then mules standing around like a herd of retarded cattle.

With the ward system you can potentially introduce characters to new items they didn't know about or knew about and would want but never considered buying at the time. Or sell things in sets so that when a person searches for one part of the set they can find and buy the other parts directly from you. This is not something you can do with an AH. Each item has to be searched for individually.
That benefit is so small it's irrelevant. New items people will know about from the internet and seek out when they are searched for through a search function. I don't know about you but I have never looked at another mule that didn't have a star above his head when forced to go into the cattle pin.
