Didn't Tanaka specifically say in one of his old interviews that they knew that the Market Ward system was an inconvenience to players and they did it anyway? I think that pretty much sums up what got FFXIV into the situation it is in now. I'll try and see if I can find the article later.

Basically they tried to combat RMT activities and deflation/inflation with the new system. All they needed to do was implement the same AH feature without the price history and they would've solved their problem. Or perhaps if they actually had more active GMs to take care of RMT. It wasn't the AH that destroyed the economy in FFXI for so long, it was merely a tool used by RMT. SE let the Gilseller issue grow out of hand by taking too long to actually address it and act upon it. Which could easily be countered by being more active with disciplining and banning accounts.
