There's a bunch of different debates here. One, some feel we need an AFK timer, due to complications with logging on to the server. Also, that if you are logged out for being AFK too long, you shouldn't have an issue with just logging back in. What I want to know is the reason it would be implemented. Is it due to the amount of AFKers preventing other to log in, even after the expansion of alotted space on the servers? Is 1017 still that big of an issue to everyone, that SE would need to grant a system to automatically take inactive characters offline? The whole point of staying logged in- in the first place, was to not have to deal with struggling to re-access the server. So with login issues eradicated (god willing) wouldn't this feature become rather annoying in the long run?

    Just a thought.

I am sure they used to have an AFK timer in 1.0 and after 20 mins of inactivity you got disconnected. You could however just go into the menu and turn it off though so it wasn't forced. I think the AFK timer is a good thing as people who are AFK are taking up spots that people who are ready to play need and I personally think it is rather selfish of people to do it. Yes I understand that you have problems logging in but keeping yourself logged in just means you are creating a bigger problem for others. If everyone actually logged out instead of going AFK I'm sure these problems wouldn't be half as bad as they have been.

1.0 did not have a AFK timer.

I haven't had time to read beyond the first 2 pages, but I do have a moderate concern with how the AFK kicking system will be implemented. Namely will it take into account if you are in a (dungeon/pvp/xxx) queue? As a DPS I get queue times of up to 30 minutes, and if they implement a 15 minute timeout then it could be very dangerous to the playability of the game. Granted right now I am almost never afk, even while in a 30 minute queue I am constantly leveling another class. But as time passes we will all be maxing out the classes we truly care about, and then what do you do while you wait? The two solutions I've come up with are

    1) Do not consider afk while in any form of Queue
    2) Provide a warning when the user will be logged out in XX ammount of time.

    Just some food for thought.

Thanks for the translation, and I am so glad they are adding an AFK timer. just the amount of people that abused staying logged in is evidence of the company needing to implement it. you cant trust the players enough to log out, its sad but the AFk timer is needed.

Server transfers have been outlined since the early access period, its listed under the mog station. and likely will be free. SE like many other companies see's the value in establishing the player base, they want everything to be in working order before they draw money. simply so there are no issues or qualms about it. They would rather spend money now to ensure profit later, the same with these server increases. they intelligently want to slowly open it up because they know a games hype bloats the numbers. it would suck to spend millions on servers and infrastructure just to have it taking up space after the hype has died down.

Its a combination of new technology and getting caught with their pants down.
Yes it is 12 years later, but that only made them want/need to pack on the features and create a game far more demanding of its servers than XI could have allowed in the pre-broadband era. Word got out about how much they improved it (again, lots of features) and they got bum rushed by a tidal wave of players.

Dumping the AFK players is bailing with a bucket in an sudden sea of overload.
I'd wager more of it is coming from those of us moving around, killing stuff, and using things like the duty finder.

What they really need is more hardware to deal with all the folks who are hammering away at their new toy.

Dude, if you leave your pc because of ueueing you deserve to be kicked, as you will also likely miss your queue. Seriously there are things to do while queueing up for DF, if you go afk you deserve to be kicked.

Well, no. Sometimes you are doing something else entirely like playing a flash-based browser game with a stamina system while waiting for your queue (i've done that) or watching some anime or even making dinner (i've done that as well Beans, rice, hamburgers and fists).
Either way, if you're in a queue you really shouldn't be AFK booted, and hell if you ARE AFK long enough to actually need to be booted (i'm hoping that the AFK timer is at minimum hour and a half) you're going to miss your queue and end up booted anyway.
