Shouldn't be to hard to place an icon on it or something or just a number that is the same as you number your sets.

I think
- Icon would work as numbers would get messy if the same piece was on multiple gear.
- How they do icon so you know which multiple gear sets an item is on would be interesting as opposed to just attached to one of your various gear sets
- Having said that knowing which gear set they are attached to would save a lot of time as if an item is attached to one gear set and you have to trawl thru a few gear sets to find could be frustrating.
There was something from Square about icons due to memory issues.
EDIT: i guess a filter type arrangement could work in with this. ie show items on all gear sets vs set number 1, 2, 3 etc

Well it's not har to slap the icon there, the "hard" bit is to have a system to keep track of all of it at all times which takes indeed game resources plus development time.
I know in WoW, if you used outfitter, it added the name of the item set that the item belonged to, to the tooltip. Don't see why they couldn't do that here. At least I think it was WoW...
Development resources, sure, but it shouldn't take game resources. The system already knows when a gear set is missing one of its components. In other words, your items are already flagged as belonging to a specific gear set. All that's left to do is give the gear icon a 5x5 flat color overlay to make this flag visible to the player. They already have the overlay system in place to display materia slots so that's not an issue either.
It's likely one of the more simple things to do, it just isn't high on their priority list. Personally, I agree that a pop-up when selling them and a small gear set indication overlay - even if it doesn't display which set the item belongs to - would be great. But there are probably more pressing matters when it comes to the interface right now.
