How the is that a serious load? The server is already handling AI, game physics, character input, updating the client with all relevant data, etc. The operation of the queue should be so minimal in comparison that it should be virtually non-existent.

Besides, if management of the queue is so intense, I would think it could just be on a separate piece of hardware if you're so worried about it impacting the gameplay of clients currently in the game and playing.

If you make an MMO, and your solution to the too many log ins problem is that you can only have a few hundred people in the queue, I think you've done something horribly, horribly wrong.
