If you are using Windows (Windows 7 specifically), right click on your volume icon on the lower right and click on "Mixer" or "Open Volume Mixer", then look for FFXIV and click mute.

Not strictly on topic, but everyone is using Windows. It's a requirement to run the game. The volume mixer is also in earlier Windows versions, so this should work for anyone.
Of course, if someone has somehow figured out how to work around that with a Windows emulator (and do tell!), they probably know how to control application sounds. = )
