I kinda feel the same about the game. But not because of the same reasons. I really do think they are trying. I am, however, really hoping they do improve the targeting as you have mentioned.

They should limit the targetting range. I use the gamepad and I keep targetting things that aren't even within my reach. its annoying as hell.

Targetting stuff that's out of range is something you'll find in every MMORPG. It may not seem like it, but you would hate it if it wasn't there. Bottom line there is if you can see it on your screen, you should be able to target it.

What we DO need is smarter targeting. Prioritize levequest targets, claimed enemies, and party members. Make target selection based on field of vision of the character instead of the game camera.

And, slightly related but just as important, give us some kind of visual cue to let us know when the enemy is within attack range (e.g. buttons on the action bar darkened if they cannot be used). I'm bolding this for emphasis because it is a simple thing to implement, and it would make a HUGE improvement in the battle mechanics. The buttons are already darkened when an ability is in cool-down, or when we don't have enough TP. Why not also darken them when an enemy is outside an ability's area of effect? Or those Pugilist abilities that can only be executed after an attack is evaded?

You know, I think I'm gonna post a new thread right now. ^_^

I find that I am not willing to struggle to play a game.

None of my party members are going to die because I can't target them fast enough. I will never aggro a monster that I did not intend to (or stand there motionless toggling through mobs during battle) because of a sub-par targeting system.

/target npc should target the nearest mob, not the mob nearest to the center of your screen.

I don't want to use macros to heal specific members. Macros are not reliable, perhaps because of server-side authentication. I want to cue my Cure spell then select them from the party list using UP/DOWN on the D-pad.

The squeekiest wheel gets the grease, right? So I can't just stop repeating myself.

The problem I see is that the players who won't play FFXIV because the targeting sucks have just moved on. They don't care if FFXIV lives or dies. The only players left playing are just determined to have fun playing FFXIV. They have accepted the crap targeting system long ago.

For those that have already given up on having a real targeting system and are willing to just play a sub-par game, I'm sure that content is more important.

I clearly don't speak for the majority of players or there would be "targeting is crap" threads all time (Oh, wait). But I do speak for 100% of PS3 players who will be forced to use a controller.

We need a functional /assist command.

I won't be playing FFXIV until this is fixed. It's not fun.
Did you know you CAN use the Up/Down to target party members? For heals, buffs and ect.. The targeting is so easy and simple to use. When was the last time you played the game? To use the Up/Down taget anything with your spell and use the up/down to go through the party list. Simple and easy, Well i guess not easy for everyone.

To be fair that's only in Targeting Mode A (the default mode though >.>). I don't know how many people actually know there are two distinct targeting modes, with B having the sub-modes within it.

I agree with the OP. Please, please, fix targetting!

Assist should be of paramount priority right now! I would also like to ask for the return of the <bt>, <lastst>, <stnpc>, <stpc> and the addition of <stfoe> or equivalent. Treating NPCs and enemy mobs as a single category makes no sense.

Also, as it stands after patch 1.17, gamepad targetting still needs one more fix: Although the UP and DOWN arrows now do cycle party members in the party frame order, the corresponding member lacks adequate highlighting on said party frame. This causes the need to keep your eyes on the TARGET frame, as it cycles from member to member, a frankly undesirable distraction. I can't begin to tell you the amount of accidental aggro I have caught since the patch went live. If I want to be mindful both of my party-mates HP levels, and of targeting them quickly so that they can be cured in a timely fashion, then I can't afford to mind my surroundings.

Highlight the party member that is being subtargetted after the spell has been selected, please!

The issue with the Function keys is also overdue for a fix. It made sense to reserve keys for other purposes when parties were 15 members, but with 8, there're more than enough to assign one key per party member. Either F9 or F12 could become the key for mobs.

Write out a line of macros

    /ac "Cure" <p0>

replace "Cure" with whatever is your favoured spell and repeat through <p0> to <p7>

you are <p0> and party members are counting down from the top of the list

    you can also add

    /aoe on

to the macro line if you want

It's not a magic wand but it will keep your party alive if you're having trouble targeting them fast enough.

    Macros make Controllers awsome.

I use A contreller( XBOX 360 wired) and the Old Logitec keyboard. The keyboard fits in your lap. The keyboard is a USB input and it the one that has a built in controller to it for the PS2. I would use it for FFXI and it was/ is still awsome. I do noy t use the controller part any more but the keyboard part rocks. I have had it for 7-8 years and it still works great. Any MMO you should have a keyboard it just makes everything easier.

I would like to add that I play on keyboard and sometimes I play on controller (keyboard by habit from FFXI on pc I can't break it), I don't like either of the targeting modes :/ I feel like the first one is too flexible (meaning too many targets) and the 2nd one is inflexible. Switching between targeting modes isn't really what I'd like to be doing the whole game :/

I have played with controller since day one and I really don't have much problem with targeting. There has been times where it is annoying and it should be made to feel like FFXI's control schemes. I am sure you guys got a layout for the PS3 made up, so why not give us that version of controls and targeting (assuming its different)
