I'm not sure how opposed SE is to this, some people claim to remember Tanaka saying something in favor of it, but I remember the opposite. Anyways, I think it would be in the game's benefit to do something like Blizzard does with WoW. I know that's on the extreme end but with proper maintenance they can allow and disallow whatever they want. By locking people into a specific UI without customization, it causes players to look at third party overlays to simulate the addons. Things like windower, apradar, etc.

I think provided proper moderation, a fully customizable UI is the best option. If they don't want damage meters or boss mods, they could easily remove the ability to make such things. Blizzard does it, both games use LUA.

However, I'm not sure how any of this would work with the PS3. Although, I suppose there's nothing wrong with the two versions of the game being slightly different.

Wow disallows GearScore now, and DBM is never "required" unless you're incapable of playing without it. If you raid and you start wiping the group because you can't grasp game mechanics, you'll generally be asked to download DBM. Personally, I haven't used boss mods since TBC and I did fine in the very successful guilds I was in. "Many people" consider them mandatory, but most people won't notice you're not using them unless you fail.
