I haven't been able to figure this one out. Would like to understand how this command works so I can macro it for party play. Anyone have any insights they can share?

Think you macro it then click tank hit the macro and it will then switch to his target when you set up the macro correctly. I might be wrong though.
I literally just read a topic where someone mentioned not wanting to play with people who didn't know how to "use assist" properly, and came to this forum to ask what that is as well. :P As a DPS I'd love for someone to clarify how to set "assist" up properly.
Well, according to the old Lodestone's list of text commands...
"Targets the target of a PC specified by a ‹t› or ‹p#› macro." Also /as.
I believe V2 also allows you to put in a name.
Examples:
/as <p3>
/as "Akronis Kutskira"
/assist <t>
It should work on enemies as well.
Assisting is a good party mechanic.. maximise the DPS against an individual target ..
apparantly the T key targets the target of your current target.
I dare you to say that 5 times fast.
The game also has things that tanks can do, such as putting big numbers or targets over their targets head just to make it clear to people.. i am unsure if clicking on these signs targets the enemy that is "signed" or not..
You can select your tank from party list OR if he is holding aggro i guess you could target anything that is attacking the tank and press assist or T twice...
As Sturok said, if you are on PC all you have to do is click on your tank and hit T to switch to their target.
For PS3 or PC with gamepad, you will need to make the macro:
/target <tt>
This will do the same thing as hitting T on the keyboard. Just stick it on your action bar by hitting Square on the macro in the macro list, then "Set to Hotbar". After that all you have to do is target your tank (remember, up and down on the D-pad targets your party members) and hit your macro to change to his target.
I'm on PS3. I had tried just /assist with nothing after it - that gave invalid target. Also tried /assist <p#> where # was the number of the tank in the party but that wasn't working either.
As suggested I'll give the /target <tt> macro a try tonight. Thanks a lot!
The party command for targeting is just the #. So, for assist, you'd use "/assist <2>" and it would target the mob that party member 2 is fighting. You may rearrange your party list using the party menu. Also, it can help to mark a target as well. To mark, use the /mk command (for example, "/mk attack1" would mark whatever you're targeting as the attack 1 sign). You can combo these together as well to mark the tank's attack target as attack 1 and everyone in the party can see. Hope this helps!
Mouse and Keyboard users can just press the T key. PS3 / gamepad users will need a macro.
I use the following macro to assist: /assist <t>
In example, when healing or DD I will target the tank in the party quickly using up/down on the dpad. Then I'll press the assist macro which is slotted on my main battle hotbars to target the tanks target. This make it much less likely to pull the monster to yourself as the tank will have high enmity (hate) on their target. If I was to attack another monster which the tank isn't fighting it's likely it will focus attacks on me. This make it harder for the tank / healer to keep you alive.
I do think assist is extremely useful and wish the developers had made it an action with it's own icon so more people would use it.
Hmm... Maybe the /assist command isn't in V2. I didn't see it in that list of commands on the old Lodestone for phase four. I'd check in-game, but I'm getting 1017. Edit: Never mind, I take too long to type things. Seems it was confirmed above.
If you want to see how to use a command you can type "/? COMMAND". So something like "/? hud" or "/? /hud".
To find commands without a proper list, type a slash and press the Tab key.
By the way, <tt> should work directly with actions if you want to use it like that, but /target is the most practical for slot management.
