Is there a good guide as to the ins and outs of Materia usage? What I am looking for is a guide that will tell me what level of Materia is appropriate for item levels. I am running into a problem where I can use a grade V Materia on a level 55 piece of gear and get full value but If I use the same type of Materia on a level 55 item used in a different slot I do not. Also can I not double up on Materia for a piece of gear i.e. 2 Grade V Craftsmanship will not give me +12 in Craftsmanship. I want to become better versed on the system before I spend anymore Gil. Thank You.

In this new system, nothing stops you from putting any proper grade materia on the proper leveled item. However, you will hit stat caps. There are caps to each piece of equipment based on the item level, so putting a Tier V craftsmanship materia on the body wont necessarily give the same effect if you put it on the legs. Each item is different. Unfortunately, there isnt really a chart or guide for this yet.

When it comes to forbidden melding, the only thing you lose is the catalyst and the materia that you are trying to add (as compared to losing everything). While this makes the system easier, the stat caps again kind of force you to use different materia. While there is customization, you need to vary your materia a bit. In your example, you might want to vary crafting gear with Control or CP (Quite frustrating, I know, as I am currently trying to get my craftsmanship as high as possible).

The AF bodies can double meld two tier IV craftmanship materia with little trouble I think.
