Paladins have a lot of damage mitigation (defense). Wars do not. Wars savior is having a lot of HP. The more HP base you have the more hp you get from you bonus abilities because they work on a percentage.

Yes, strength is important. But upping that base vit score will help keep you alive longer for sure. I've read that one strategy is to put all your points in Vit and then use Material to boost Str. I have no idea if that is the right way to go or not.

Personally I'm going about half and half. I think there is an item that can reset your points. Can't recall what its called or what it costs.
