Sorry but instanced housing like that (which is what FFXI had) is quite antiquated.Phantasy Star Universe had a great housing method. Everyone had mini appartments and you could put some stuff into it. You could buy decorations and chairs and stuff, and people could place stuff of their own in yours if there was space to. I rather enjoyed getting the toilets and spamming them in people's rooms. I just wasnt a homely place to chill at and talk to people. Not sit around Ul'dah because I'm sick of that city.
Give us the ability to change the world or give us nothing.
If XIV ever gets as populated as it was when CE came out, there'd be no way it could happen. It wouldn't work out right, though it'd be nice to have and actually do something in the world.
You underestimate the powers of copy-paste and aren't factoring in the addition of new zones.

And I don't think you realize that people will mostly populate the new zones or gather to a common one (in our case, Ul'dah).
Just saying, I'd rather have my own instanced room that my friends can come into. Hell, they should do like PSU and you can sell your stuff from your instanced room. It was nice to have that.
Instanced zones don't work (look at Age of Conan) because they don't matter to anyone else besides the people who own the zone. In a MMO you need to foster a sense of community and you can't do that unless the players tread a common ground.... literally. And I don't think you realize that people will mostly populate the new zones or gather to a common one (in our case, Ul'dah).

We definitely need tents! It's in a lot of FF games, and it would rock. Even just for cosmetic purposes.I like this idea a lot. I would be doubtful that housing in XIV would be this free form but who knows? Anything that's player driven is a great idea, an instanced village is probably what we would get in this game unfortunately. While I like the idea of being able make to put houses in the existing wild I am not with the idea of contested land or villages you need to defend from other players. That's in the realm of a PvP game which this is not.
IF it were possible to build houses in the world at large or even camps I would be all over that. What is a camp? It can be as simple as a bonfire in the wild, or as large as a bunch of tents put together, perhaps you can even bring your retainer along (put up a bell post). Camps in games usually bring about bonuses, maybe they regen anima or something as helpful.
As I said, the dev team can choose where the houses go. No need for instancing. Complete creativity. Just let people know that if they make something inappropriate, they will be banned. Simple enough. I doubt someone would purchase all the materials and risk getting banned by doing something offensive. I think these servers hold 4000 people. I think we could have that many houses in Eorzea. In any case, it's up to the dev team.
The idea is nice and fascinating indeed. In any case, the freedoom should be limited to designed areas, not to 'ruin' the enviroment (like in the real world). I would spend hours to create and customize my house, between a dungeon and a quest.
You could also rent NPCs (and equip them) to defend your house from beastmen or garleands, when you are not logged in. Some nice residences could be.. little castles near on a cliff, houses on trees (like gifthorse's img) or something similar to hobbits homes under a hill. Every player could also create something interactive (for the other players) in his/her house (or in the garden) to make it not only a mere 'scenography' but part of the same world (like some facilities to use for crafting or devices to regain something -fast idea=anima wheel to regain some points every 1 hour-).
And i would LOVE to have tents or make campfire around. :0
But only one thing i would like to ask to the devs: there is something in the cauldron about Housing (also basic) in the near future? Thanks.![]()
If they made an entire specific (seamless) zone perhaps behind the main cities made for the idea of building your own houses or something, that could work. I like the idea of player-made villages though. I've yet to play a game that can actually implement the player housing well. Perhaps they could use it as a way bring moogles back into the forefront of the game? Each house has one, like in XI, but they help you with building your house, decorating, etc etc
I would like to see Linkshell Houses or headquarters. This might be easier as there will be fewer then if there were individual houses. I would also suggest a linkshell would have to have at least 20 - 50 member minimum to build a ls home.
It would be nice if the members of the linkshell build the houses themselves or hire out help if needed.
Specific crafters could do certain things. A carpenter(s) build the frame of the house. Other crafters could make items in front or in the home that could aide or improve the linkshell. Ex might be a statue that increases control for crafting while in the home. It would also be nice if all members of a linkshell were able to decorate their own room in the house. A grand hall would serve as a gathering, discussion, or crafting point. If I'm gonna dream... then I might also consider certain rooms for specific crafts like a kitchen, laboratory, sewing room, etc.
Overall, this would be a really exciting feature in the game. It would strengthen a linkshell community as well. Crafters would gain more prestige and the accomplishment of making something useful to help their linkshell, especially if they focus on crafting instead of fighting skills.
Oh, for members of the community that do not want to have a linkshell I suggest a hotel where they can get a permanent room at; appartments would work as well.

I want to see instanced player villages. ^^ Where we can build and upgrade our own homes - with the help of crafters (friends? hire people?) or by our own hand. Though I think if we choose to build it alone (assuming we have the crafting ranks needed) that it should go a bit slower than with people helping.
I'm thinking... a huge piece of land that holds a certain number of houses, where people can purchase land and build. You can start with building a small house, and can increase the size cap later with quests or with large sums of gil.
Have many of these, so once one instance is filled, say with 20-50 houses or something, a player can search the next area for free land. Allowing only one piece of land on the lot per character of course.
Would like the ability to upgrade the house to be quite large in it's final stage. Lots of room for furnishings and friends to visit.
This is what I've always imagined as the perfect housing feature for me. :x
(As much as I'd love to see houses out in zones that exist already, I don't think SE would do that. People could fight over land, "I wanted that spot, mine's boring!" Or places become crowded. I really would love to see houses out all over the place but I honestly think it would work best if they made big instanced areas that could hold a set number of houses.)
